As part of the training activities for professionals, the Women's Hospital of Pará (HMPA), in Belém, promotes the I Patient Safety Week. The program, which started this Wednesday (17), World Patient Safety Day, runs until Friday (19).

The event reinforces the established protocols for meeting the international safety goals defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), which involve the correct identification of the patient; effective communication among professionals; verification of medication and surgery information; infection control; and prevention of falls and injuries.

According to the coordinator of the Patient Quality and Safety Center (NQSP), Patrícia de Melo, the program aims to strengthen safety goals, with an emphasis on effective communication. “Within the theoretical-practical activities, which we are working on through dynamics that address the six goals, we chose to emphasize effective communication, an institutional priority so that we can always pursue clear, objective, and effective communication, with the understanding that what was conveyed for that assistance, that care for our patient, is done as established,” she explained.

The general director of HMPA, intensivist physician Nelma Machado, highlights the relevance of the topic. “The patient safety movement is fundamental, and when we talk about communication, we need to understand the impact it generates: receiving and passing on information correctly among teams from all sectors makes a difference in the outcome of care,” she states.

In this context, the coordinator of the Permanent Education Center (NEP), Daine Santos, explains that the dynamics used during the training allow learning to be experienced in practice, in a light and interactive way. “Each activity brings important reflections on effective communication and safe care, bringing the team even closer to the reality of our daily lives. This format strengthens not only technical knowledge but also engagement and collaboration among professionals, which are essential to ensure quality and patient-centered care,” she evaluates.

Commission - The coordinator of the NQSP notes that HMPA maintains, through the Patient Safety Center Commission, ongoing actions focused on the topic. Patrícia de Melo recalls that safety is incorporated as a daily practice of all teams in the unit. “We have institutionalized our patient safety plan 2025, gathering various activities, such as flow mapping; risk mapping; audits that encompass the six goals, using specialized methodologies, outlining training month by month; discussion circles; reestablishment of flows; implementation of methodologies, so that we can ensure and mitigate risks and, consequently, promote safety in the care of our patients,” highlights Patrícia.
