Belém was the first capital in the North Region to host, on this Tuesday (16), the premiere of the film Malês, at Cine Líbero Luxardo, with the special presence of actor and director Antônio Pitanga. The feature film addresses the Malês Revolt, which occurred in 1835, in the city of Salvador, Bahia, considered one of the largest uprisings led by enslaved black people in the history of Brazil.

Before and after the screening, Pitanga spoke with the audience present, emphasizing the importance of the work as a tool for historical recovery and the valorization of black memory. "Malês is bringing the 19th century into the conversation. It is shedding light on what happened at that time that we still do not know or know little about," said the director and actor.

According to Pitanga, the goal of the production is to keep alive the history that is often not told in school books. "I think we play a role in entering elementary education, in universities, to exchange with the youth a bit of our history and show the importance of the 19th century in the formation of the Brazilian people," he added.

Malês presents itself as an invitation to reflection and recognition of black protagonism in the formation of the country, portraying the struggle, resistance, and organization of the black population in one of the largest uprisings ever recorded in slave-holding Brazil.

Audience Reaction

The special screening moved the audience present, who filled the cinema in Belém. For many, the session was more than a moment of leisure: it was also an act of valuing the true Brazilian history.

João de Barros, a teacher in public and private networks, highlighted the educational potential of the work. "It is a way to enable our students to have this new view of Brazilian history. There is a silencing of blackness, of the achievements and struggles of the black people in Brazil," he commented.

Gabriela Borja, a member of the social collective "Sapato Preto", celebrated the screening with the presence of the director himself. "I am very anxious for this film to reach more people and projects, so that everyone has access to this story — which is our story and which we do not study in schools," she emphasized.
