Governor Helder Barbalho participates in the opening of the National Forum Verdemocracia in Belém
Event brings together ministers, magistrates, and experts from all over Brazil to discuss elections and the impacts of climate change on the democratic process

On the night of this Monday (15), Governor Helder Barbalho participated in the opening of the National Forum Verdemocracia, held at the Teatro Maria Sylvia Nunes, at Estação das Docas, in Belém. The event, promoted by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) and the Regional Electoral Court of Pará (TRE-PA), runs until Wednesday (17), bringing together ministers, magistrates, civil servants, experts, and representatives of civil society to discuss the challenges of Electoral Justice in the face of climate change and technological transformations.

During the ceremony, Governor Helder Barbalho emphasized the relevance of Belém hosting a national-level meeting, especially at a time when the capital of Pará is preparing to host the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP 30) in November 2025.
“Today is a moment when Belém transforms into the capital of the Brazilian Electoral Judiciary and the capital of democracy, bringing together representatives from all states of Brazil to reaffirm the commitment to transparent elections and the sovereignty of the popular will. Relating this agenda to the Amazon, with its vast territorial expanse and complexities, further enhances this moment, strengthening the commitment to defend a free, strong democracy that serves as a reference for the world,” stated Helder Barbalho.

Electoral Justice and sustainability
The opening conference was led by the president of the TSE, Minister Cármen Lúcia, who reinforced the importance of the connection between democracy and environmental preservation.
“And it is no coincidence that the governor emphasizes the importance of COP being here, in the heart of the Amazon, in the heart of the world, which increasingly needs to move towards democracy. We need a healthy climate, with ethical, political, economic values, and with human rights being widely respected globally as well,” highlighted the minister.

The agenda of the National Forum Verdemocracia includes panels and conferences on topics such as the impact of climate crises on electoral logistics, sustainability in electoral process practices, and combating misinformation. The closing is scheduled for the 17th, with a conference by the minister of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) and vice-president of the TSE, Nunes Marques.
