'Malês' arrives in Belém with a pre-premiere this Tuesday (16) at Cine Líbero Luxardo
The film depicts the Malê Revolt, an uprising organized by enslaved people. The actor and director of 'Malês', Antônio Pitanga, will be present at the pre-premiere screening in Belém.
The film "Malês", directed by Antônio Pitanga and acclaimed at various film festivals, will have a special pre-premiere screening this Tuesday (16) at 7:30 PM at Cine Líbero Luxardo in Belém. The actor and director of the feature will be in the capital of Pará and will participate in the session.
Tickets for the session will be sold for 12 reais. The cinema box office opens one hour before the session starts. Purchases must be made in cash.
The drama, based on historical facts, portrays the Malê Revolt, the largest organized uprising by enslaved people in Brazil's history. The insurrection mobilized the black population, both enslaved and freed, in the streets of Salvador against slavery in 1835.
Led by Muslim Africans, known as malês, the rebellion took place at the end of Ramadan, celebrated in January by Islam. After the revolt's failure, the protesters were severely punished, and repression against black people in Brazil increased.
In the film, Antônio Pitanga plays Pacífico Licutan, one of the leaders of the uprising who emphasized the importance of the participation of different tribes and religions for the success of the revolt and the end of slavery.
The film also features other real names involved in the rebellion, such as Ahuna (Rodrigo de Odé), Manoel Calafate (Bukassa Kabengele), Vitório Sule (Heraldo de Deus), and Luís Sanim (Thiago Justino), in addition to fictional characters that portray real dramas, such as Dassalu (Rocco Pitanga), Sabina (Camila Pitanga), and Abayome (Samira Carvalho).
Conversation with students in Belém- In the morning, Pitanga will also participate in a special screening followed by a debate, held in partnership with the Federal University of Pará, the National Union of Students (UNE), the Emancipatory Popular Education Movement, and Casa Ninja Belém. For this session, entry will be free with the collection of a ticket at the cinema box office.
