Castanhal Regional Hospital adopts elastomeric pumps for home oncology treatment

The initiative represents an advancement in oncological care, offering more comfort and quality of life for those undergoing treatment

The portable and disposable device allows for continuous and controlled administration of chemotherapy drugs

Since the beginning of August, five patients from the Castanhal Public Regional Hospital (HRPC) have started receiving chemotherapy through elastomeric pumps, a portable and disposable device that allows for continuous and controlled administration of chemotherapy drugs. The initiative represents an advancement in oncological care, offering more comfort and quality of life for those undergoing treatment.

The pump operates by pressure from a silicone balloon and has no electronic parts, ensuring safety and practicality. After the preparation of the chemotherapy drugs in the hospital's specific booth by the specialist pharmacist, the patient takes the equipment home, where they remain with it for about 46 hours. During this period, they can maintain their family routine, as long as they follow the guidelines provided by the nursing staff, such as avoiding wetting the pump during bathing and not exposing themselves to heat sources, such as stoves or intense sunlight.

The profile of patients eligible for treatment with the pump is carefully evaluated by the care team (oncologist, nurse, and social worker). The patient must live close to the hospital, have a sufficient level of education to understand the necessary care, and be on a chemotherapy protocol compatible with the device (long-duration chemotherapies that can be performed at home).

According to pharmacist Wainna Barroso, the impact is significant. “The equipment improves the patient's life, allowing them to undergo chemotherapy at home, without the need for hospitalization. This reduces the risk of hospital infection and provides more convenience, as they remain in the company of their family,” she emphasizes.

For patient Raimundo Vital, accompanied by his grandson Antônio Silva, the change represents relief

For many, the change represents relief. This is the case for Raimundo Vital, 77, who had already undergone four chemotherapy sessions at the hospital and is now using the elastomeric pump. “It’s better to do the treatment at home, comfortably, watching television with my grandchildren,” he says.

With this innovation, HRPC reinforces its commitment to humanized treatment, combining accessible technology, professional care, and respect for the patient's dignity.
