Oriximiná Hospital performs high-complexity thoracotomy and ensures recovery of young man
The procedure was decisive in reversing the inflammatory and pulmonary infectious condition
A high-complexity procedure performed at the Regional Hospital of Oriximiná Menino Jesus (HRMJ) successfully restored the health of Maurício Sousa dos Santos, 25 years old. The surgery preserved the patient's lung and also reversed the infection.
Maurício underwent a thoracotomy, a high-complexity surgery that allows access to the lungs and pleural space through the ribs. Among the doctors working at the unit, the procedure was considered a milestone for medicine in the Calha Norte region.
Maurício was admitted with a severe pulmonary infection with an abundant presence of pus in the right lung. “I started treatment with antibiotics, but there was no improvement. After tests, the need for surgery was confirmed. The team explained the entire process to me, and I was very well assisted during and after the procedure,” the patient said on the morning of Wednesday (10), six days after the procedure.
The surgery was conducted by the team of surgeon José Pinhata Otoch, who explained the seriousness of the case. “The patient had a congenital pulmonary cyst that evolved with bacterial infection inside it,” he stated.
“We performed the thoracotomy, resected the cyst, and drained the thorax. The lung was preserved, and the postoperative evolution was quite satisfactory. The patient is already recovering and should be discharged soon,” he added.
According to the hospital's general director, Katiuscya Braga, the surgery demonstrates the technical capacity and structure of the hospital to offer high-complexity treatments.
“Performing a procedure like this done for Maurício here in Oriximiná prevents patients from having to travel long distances in search of care,” she stated.
The director added that the hospital “plays a strategic and unprecedented role for the Calha Norte region, with humanized and quality care.”
