The Government of Pará, through the State Secretariat for Environment, Climate and Sustainability (Semas), held on Thursday (4) the 47th ordinary meeting of the State Council of Water Resources (CERH). The meeting, held in the plenary of the Semas Training Center, focused on the presentation of the State Bioeconomy Plan (PlanBio), so that the Council understands the needs and impacts of the bioeconomy sector on water resources, focusing on the development of bioeconomy in Pará.

The meeting was coordinated by the Deputy Secretariat for Water and Climate Management of Semas. Council members learned about the actions of the plan to understand the needs and impacts of the bioeconomy sector on water resources.

The director of Water Resources at Semas, Luciene Chaves, emphasized that “any activity related to bioeconomy, such as sustainable agriculture, aquaculture, forest management, biotechnology, and bioenergy production, directly depends on the availability and quality of water. The Council defines the rules and guidelines for rational use, conservation, and protection of water resources; the growth of bioeconomy will result in new demands for water, whether for irrigation, industrial processing, or other purposes. CERH needs to understand these demands to plan water management.”

Water management - Bioeconomy activities are developed in a way that does not compromise water quality; CERH has a supervisory and regulatory role for water sustainability, a pillar of bioeconomy. Collaboration between areas ensures that economic development occurs in harmony with the carrying capacity of Pará's aquatic ecosystems.

Luciene also states that “CERH ensures that economic development and water use occur in an integrated and sustainable manner, avoiding conflicts over water use and ensuring water security for the future.”

PlanBio is one of the main strategies of the Government of Pará within the scope of the State Amazon Now Plan (PEAA) and is structured around three main axes: Productive Chains and Sustainable Businesses; Cultural Heritage and Genetic Heritage; and Research, Development, and Innovation. The proposal is to promote nature-based solutions and strengthen economic models that value traditional knowledge and Amazonian biodiversity.
