The 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30), which will be held in November in Belém, will have significant participation from indigenous peoples, with an expected attendance of around 3,000 people from different places in Brazil and the world. To ensure adequate reception and protagonism, the Government of Pará, through the State Secretariat for Indigenous Peoples (Sepi), in partnership with the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples (MPI) and the Federal University of Pará (UFPA), is coordinating the creation of the COP Village – a structure aimed at accommodation and the realization of cultural, political, and spiritual activities during the event.

The initiative will utilize the infrastructure of UFPA, in an area of 72,695 square meters (m²), which will undergo renovations coordinated by the MPI to ensure better reception conditions.

In addition to the COP Village, the Indigenous Peoples Caravan to COP30, organized by Sepi in coordination with indigenous movements and leaders, traveled through the eight ethnoregions of Pará as part of the state's preparation for the conference. The action promoted listening, dialogue, and mobilization of communities, directly connecting indigenous voices to global debates on climate, territories, and socio-environmental justice.

Historical milestone - For the Secretary of Indigenous Peoples of Pará, Puyr Tembé, initiatives related to indigenous peoples have symbolic and strategic significance. “The COP Village is a historical milestone for us, indigenous peoples. Pará, through Sepi, has the honor of being a partner in this construction alongside the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples and other organizations, so that our leaders can be present and directly influence global debates on climate. COP30 will be a moment of affirmation: the future of the Amazon and the planet also depends on indigenous voices,” highlighted the secretary.

The Minister of Indigenous Peoples, Sonia Guajajara, emphasized the cultural exchange aspect of the project. “The COP30 Village will showcase our indigenous identity and will be a reference for the diversity of peoples in Brazil, open to all who wish to learn more about indigenous peoples. There we will also welcome international relatives. We are organizing everything with great care, to make it a beautiful, dignified place, with excellent reception and a schedule fully connected to the discussions of the conference. We will build the largest and best indigenous participation in the history of the COPs,” assured the minister.

The mobilization also involves the engagement of the Federation of Indigenous Peoples of Pará (Fepipa), the Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (Apib), and the Coordination of Indigenous Organizations of the Brazilian Amazon (Coiab), strengthening logistics and ensuring broad representation. With the COP Village and the Caravan, Pará consolidates itself as a reference in the Amazon in defending indigenous rights, protecting territories, and building collective solutions to face the climate crisis.
