Retired federal public servant, Mirian Sena fulfilled an old dream. A resident of the area around Avenida Duque de Caxias in Belém, she donated and directly participated in the planting of five tree seedlings as part of the requalification project carried out along one of the busiest roads in the capital of Pará.

Mirian Sena celebrated the opportunity to contribute to the maintenance of plant species and, consequently, to the quality of life of the population in one of the projects that are part of the legacy of the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30) in the capital of Pará.

“I served at Ibama (Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources) for over 35 years, and that’s where my love for greenery comes from, from the possibility of preserving and providing well-being with the shade of trees. I have lived here in the Duque de Caxias area for 60 years, and I have always wanted to plant these ipês, which were germinated by me and my husband. They are trees that will bring thermal comfort, providing better conditions for people to enjoy all the benefits we are receiving here from COP30,” said the retiree.

She also highlighted the improvements made on Nova Duque de Caxias, which include revitalization of the bike lane, walking path, sports, leisure, and community spaces. “The work is magnificent, providing conditions for a good walk, for example. Just the view is already wonderful. Today, we talk about COP30 in November, but it is an eternal benefit for all of us. This ecological corridor will remain for many generations. We can only be grateful for this work being done on Duque de Caxias, as I was raised here, raised my children, and I intend to continue enjoying it for many, many years,” she stated.

Progress on the works - The Government of Pará, through the State Department of Public Works (Seop), is advancing with the services on Avenida Duque de Caxias. In June, the State removed the barriers from the blocks included in the first phase of the works, in the stretch between Travessas Antônio Baena and Humaitá, already allowing the population to use the new bike lane, the walking path, and the leisure areas with outdoor gym, benches, trash cans, game tables, picnic areas, and pet space.

On Humaitá, a covered crossing was installed, providing shelter from sun and rain, as well as generating comfort at another resting point.

The works are the result of an agreement signed between the Government of Pará and the Federal Government, through Itaipu Binacional, which covers hundreds of streets and avenues in Belém. The interventions also include asphalt paving and road signage, revitalization of roundabouts, installation of medians, drainage, tactile accessibility flooring, planting of grass and seedlings, and new lighting.
