Environmental Police Command seizes illegal fishing materials and rescues Amazonian turtles in Senador José Porfírio
During a patrol in the Tabuleiro do Embaubal Wildlife Refuge, military police located fishing gear and wildlife at risk of extinction

The Environmental Police Command (CPA) of the Military Police of Pará intercepted, last Sunday (24), an illegal fishing operation in the Tabuleiro do Embaubal Wildlife Refuge (REVIS), located in the municipality of Senador José Porfírio, southeast of the state. In the operation, a longline, two gillnets, and six specimens of Amazonian Turtles, a species considered at risk of extinction, were seized.
The action took place during routine patrols conducted by the CPA in the conservation unit, considered the largest nesting area for the species in Pará. Upon sighting the police, an individual in a boat abandoned the materials and fled the scene. The objects and animals were sent to the base of the State Institute for Forest Development and Biodiversity of Pará (Ideflor-Bio), responsible for preservation measures.
The commander of the CPA, Colonel QOPM Orlandino Sebastião Bastos Lima, highlighted the importance of integrated actions in the region. “The REVIS Tabuleiro do Embaubal is a state conservation unit located in the municipality of Senador José Porfírio, bathed by the Xingu River. It contains the main nurseries and nesting beaches for Amazonian turtles, which migrate from different rivers for reproduction between July and December, becoming vulnerable to the criminal actions of individuals who hunt and collect their eggs for consumption or commercialization. In this sense, the CPA, in partnership with Ideflor-Bio, develops preventive monitoring and inspection actions to preserve the species and ensure their reproductive cycle,” he explained.
The species is at risk of extinction, and factors such as habitat degradation, hunting, accidental capture in fishing, and marine pollution exacerbate the extinction of sea turtles in the wild. In addition to enforcement actions, the CPA reinforces the preventive nature of environmental policing to combat crimes against the Amazonian fauna and flora, strengthening biodiversity conservation for future generations.
