The Official State Gazette (DOE), on Monday (18), brought the call for a public consultation in the municipality of São João de Pirabas, northeastern Pará. The intention is to discuss the creation of three new nature conservation units.
The hearing is scheduled for September 30, from 8 am to 12 pm, at the headquarters of the Young Squadron, located at Travessa Presidente Médice, s/n, in the Independência neighborhood. The meeting will be open to the participation of the local population, traditional communities, organized civil society, and representatives of the public authority.

According to the publication, two of the proposed units will be managed by the State through the Institute of Forest Development and Biodiversity (Ideflor-Bio): one for Integral Protection, covering the Tucundeua Island, and another for Sustainable Use, involving the Itanarajá Island and Pilão Beach. The third will be the responsibility of the municipality, in the category of Municipal Forest, encompassing the area known as Campo do Sal.

The initiative complies with the guidelines of State Law No. 10.306/2023, which establishes the State Policy for Nature Conservation Units (PEUC) and the State System of Conservation Units (SEUC). The process includes conducting technical studies, mobilization meetings, and the prior availability of information to the directly involved communities. The goal is to ensure transparency, social dialogue, and popular participation in defining the limits, categories, and objectives of the future protected areas.
According to the president of Ideflor-Bio, Nilson Pinto, the public consultation is an essential moment to ensure legitimacy and social engagement in the process of creating the units.
“We are dealing with strategic areas for the conservation of biodiversity and for the quality of life of the local population. Therefore, it is essential to listen to the communities, clarify doubts, and build joint solutions that ensure environmental protection and sustainable development,” he stated.

The director of Biodiversity Management at Ideflor-Bio, Crisomar Lobato, highlighted that the technical studies already conducted indicate great ecological and social relevance for the region. “These are areas that house coastal and insular ecosystems of high importance, in addition to communities that directly depend on these territories. The public consultation process will allow for aligning conservation and sustainable use, always with active participation from the population,” he explained.

Interested parties can access the technical studies that support the proposal on the Ideflor-Bio website (www.ideflorbio.pa.gov.br), via the institutional email ([email protected]), or on the São João de Pirabas City Hall portal (www.saojoaodepirabas.pa.gov.br). The Institute emphasizes that public contribution will be decisive for the creation of the new conservation units and invites all segments of society to participate in the meeting.
