Emergency Care at PSRM Completes One Year of Service with Advances and Innovations in Provided Assistance
The Government of Pará unit has established itself as a reference in urgent and emergency care for the Metropolitan Region, with resolutiveness and humanized care
The Government of Pará, through the State Health Department (Sespa), celebrated this Thursday (14) the first year of operation of the Adult Emergency Care (PAA) at the Dr. Roberto Macedo Emergency Room (PSRM) in Belém. During this period, more than 75,000 urgent and emergency care services were provided, resulting in 2,943 surgeries and 4,598 hospitalizations, consolidating the unit as one of the main entry points for the population of the Metropolitan Region and neighboring neighborhoods to Augusto Montenegro Avenue.
The PAA is the main open door of the hospital, providing care without the need for a medical referral. In addition to the high demand, the unit recorded a hospitalization rate of only 6% of the patients treated, which highlights the resolutiveness of the cases handled. The service area reaches over 3 million people.

The medical coordinator of the PAA, Anderson Silva, highlighted the advances made during the period.
“In one year, we qualified the assistance with relevant protocols, such as those for Sepsis, Chest Pain, and Stroke, using thrombolytics. To achieve this, we continuously trained the team, ensuring a modern, efficient, and resolutive model,” he stated.
Structure and Specialized Services
The Emergency Care unit has 50 inpatient beds, 10 intensive care beds, and more than 20 observation beds, in addition to complete diagnostic support and high-complexity procedures, such as endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), videolaparoscopy, and video pleuroscopy. The unit also offers care in specialties such as general surgery, thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, neurology, and hematology.
In March of this year, the sector began to provide thrombolytic therapy for Ischemic Stroke (AVCI), being the only public urgent and emergency unit in the Metropolitan Region of Belém to offer the protocol in a timely manner.

In addition to the speed of care, the PAA invests in quality management methodologies. The Lean Green Belt Project, which combines Lean Six Sigma practices, is being applied to optimize flows and reduce waste, ensuring efficiency and excellence in care.
Patient Marcos Paulo Nunes, 29, a resident of Belém, highlighted the speed of the assistance.

“I arrived with pain caused by gallstones and thought I would wait months for surgery. To my surprise, within a few hours I was already referred for the procedure. The care was very quick and of excellent quality,” he reported.
Qualified Team Close to the Population
The professionals at the PAA receive constant training through the Patient Quality and Safety Center (NQSP) and the Permanent Education Center. The sector also implemented a pre-triage conducted by nurses at the reception, which improved the flow of care and guided the population on when to seek the service.

The assistant director, Aristônico Rodrigues, reinforced the team's commitment.
“Maintaining quality in the face of high demand is a priority. We have implemented strategies to ensure agility without compromising safety and the resolutiveness of assistance,” he explained.
Active Listening and Social Responsibility
The User Service (SAU) acts as a direct channel between patients and management, with satisfaction surveys applied in person and through digital means. The unit also develops educational and humanization actions, with lectures and activities aimed at disease prevention, sustainability, and the well-being of patients and companions.
The general director of PSRM, Carlos Vinícius Ribeiro Quadros, assessed the positive impact of the unit.
“One year after the opening of the Adult Emergency Care, we have noticed a new dynamic in urgent and emergency care in Belém and the Metropolitan Region. Many lives have been saved and quality of life ensured. The entire team is committed to providing increasingly qualified and resolutive health care,” he concluded.
The service is also approved by the population. Manoel Antônio de Jesus, a resident of the Tapanã neighborhood, reported his mother's experience as a user of the PAA.

“My mother, 78 years old, depends on medication provided here and has always been treated with attention and speed. The care is excellent, and it is very good to be able to count on this hospital close to home,” he stated.
