The Gaspar Vianna Clinical Hospital (HC), in Belém, promoted special programs in honor of Father's Day - celebrated this year on August 10, with activities aimed at valuing the paternal figure and caring for emotional health. Hospitalized patients and those receiving care experienced moments of emotion and relaxation.

In the Medical Outpatient Service, the Waiting Room Project held a discussion circle, led by neuropsychologist Ilze Amaral, which addressed feelings related to the presence - or absence - of fathers. The "telephone of the wind" dynamic invited participants to express unspoken messages and emotions to their fathers, resulting in moments of strong emotion.

Program helps maintain emotional health

“We seek to bring more comfort to the patient, always with thematic dynamics in commemorative months. We are in the month of fathers, a date that reinforces the importance of the paternal figure. The 'telephone of the wind' dynamic was very emotional. Many users were able to express emotions that had been kept for a long time, and they left here feeling lighter and welcomed,” said Ilze Amaral.

Among the participants, patient Djalma Teixeira shared his experience and feelings of gratitude. “Surprises like this brighten our day and even change our behavior. Just coming to the hospital makes us tense, worried about what the doctor will say. And then we are welcomed with an action like this, with a prepared team that embraces and moves us. It was a moment of fellowship between fathers and professionals. Something that makes all the difference,” he stated.

Reception - “We promoted an action aimed especially at fathers, with the intention of providing information, answering questions, and promoting a moment of listening and emotion. We talked about the role of the father at home, about feelings, and also about loss, with the presence of the neuropsychologist. It was a moment of great emotion. Our project emerged in the post-pandemic period when we noticed idleness in the waiting. Since then, we have been doing monthly actions with various themes. It is a way to welcome, to bring closer, and to ensure that the patient feels cared for, from arrival to departure,” explained Jaciara Cruz, coordinator of the Medical Outpatient Service at HC.

In the Medical Clinic, patients participated in games and listened to music played on a record player, aiming to retrieve emotional memories and relax. While listening to songs that marked eras, the participants - most of whom are already in their senior years - relived memories of their youth, shared personal stories, and engaged in playful activities, reinforcing social bonds.

Teresa Rocha, psychologist: encouraging patients

Happy memories - Psychologist Teresa Rocha highlighted that the initiative has a significant impact on emotional well-being. “The games, along with the music, provide a bit of joy, making patients transport themselves to a moment when they had a happy life, different from this period of illness. This encourages them to improve and think: I will leave here and see things, listen to music. It is also a moment to share with colleagues that they can be happy, play, request songs, play games… This is the purpose of the project: to take the focus off the hospital environment and bring lightness,” she explained.

In the Medical Clinic, patients with multiple comorbidities are hospitalized, mainly related to the reference areas of the Hospital de Clínicas: cardiology, nephrology, and psychiatry.

Cosme Neves: activity reduces stress

Relaxation - Cosme Neves, 61 years old, has been at HC for almost three months, after being admitted with a heart problem that affected his kidneys. With three children, he said that the activities helped relieve the stress of the hospitalization period.

“It’s very good, especially because we get a little distracted. Two months and a bit inside a hospital makes us stressed, and this is good for relaxing the mind. The music accompanied my youth. I really like to play dominoes. I used to play with my mother, with my wife. It brings back memories of home,” he reported.

The Waiting Room Project and the actions in the Medical Clinic are promoted by HC in partnership with multiprofessional teams, always emphasizing humanization, comprehensive care, and active listening.
