The Pará Sanitation Company (Cosanpa) has started the works of the Pará Sanitation Development Project (Prodesan Pará). The project foresees investments in infrastructure to expand and modernize the water supply and sewage system in different regions of Belém, Ananindeua, and Marituba.

The first point to receive interventions is the 4th supply sector, which serves the Guamá neighborhood — the most populous in the capital, with over 81,000 residents, according to the IBGE census (2022). In this phase, a new pumping station, supported and elevated reservoirs, an electrical substation, and revitalization of the existing reservoir will be constructed, with waterproofing, painting, and cleaning services. The works will be carried out within Cosanpa's operational areas, without impacting local traffic.

With the completion, the water storage capacity in the sector will increase by 70%, which will improve supply, especially in more distant points of the network that currently suffer from low pressure.

“Starting with Guamá is significant, as it is the most populous neighborhood that will benefit from Prodesan. These works will improve the supply precisely for those who need it most, bringing more pressure and regularity to the water that reaches the taps,” highlighted Tatiana Costa, coordinator of Prodesan Pará.

For the president of Cosanpa, José Fernando de Mendonça Gomes Júnior, the start of Prodesan works in Guamá marks a decisive step towards strengthening sanitation in the Metropolitan Region of Belém.

“This project is essential to transform the reality of those who currently face difficulties in accessing water and represents Cosanpa's commitment to quality service and the social and economic development of our region,” reinforced José Fernando de Mendonça Gomes Júnior.

With the new management model for sanitation in the State, Cosanpa will continue to be responsible for water production in the municipalities of Belém, Ananindeua, and Marituba. However, since Prodesan is a project prior to the concession, the Company will continue to execute the works provided for in the contract. After completion, the new structures for operation and distribution of treated water will be the responsibility of the concessionaire Águas do Pará.

Community Participation
Before the start of the services, the social and environmental teams of the project were in the Guamá neighborhood to hear the demands of the population and present the stages of the work. The community will be invited to actively participate in monitoring the work through the Work Monitoring Commission (CAO), which will be formed later this month.

Each sector receiving interventions will have local representatives on the commission, acting as monitors of the investment. Meetings will be organized at accessible times and spaces, with facilities for mothers to participate accompanied by their children.

The project also pays special attention to female participation and addressing gender-based violence, highlights the sub-coordinator of Institutional Strengthening, gender, and communication of Prodesan Pará, Natasha Vasconcelos.

“Recent research shows that lack of access to water and basic sanitation disproportionately impacts women, with significant consequences for their health, well-being, and access to work and education. Therefore, Prodesan includes specific training actions and suitable spaces for women to actively participate in this process,” emphasizes Natasha Vasconcelos.

She adds: “In addition, we conduct periodic training with internal staff and contractors, covering all agents involved in the works, on the use of national and international protocols to prevent all forms of gender-based violence and intersectionalities.”

The Project also includes a social action aimed at schools located around the works, which will feature various lectures, actions, and workshops on environmental education and citizenship education. Nearly 80 schools will benefit from events that involve visits to the Bolonha ETA, actions to reduce heat waves and climate adaptation, menstrual dignity, racial literacy, and rainwater harvesting, etc.

About Prodesan Pará
Prodesan is a multi-project initiative, encompassing water supply and sewage works in Belém, Ananindeua, and Marituba, benefiting over 1 million people. Among the planned interventions are the implementation of new pipelines, distribution networks, household connections, and the construction of a new Sewage Treatment Station. The goal is to modernize and expand the sanitation system, ensuring more efficient service and better quality of life for the population. Prodesan also foresees investments in technological innovation and operational efficiency of Cosanpa.
