Listening can change stories. At the Lago de Tucuruí Polyclinic, a unit of the Government of Pará located in southeastern Pará, active listening is one of the main tools of Social Services. The area works to ensure that no social or emotional barriers hinder the treatment of users.

“We don’t just take care of the exam or the consultation. We look at the person as a whole, at what they are going through outside the unit, because that also interferes with health,” explains social worker Lorena Barbosa Leite.

With individual and group appointments, the team helps patients and families understand their rights, access social benefits, and find support in times of greater vulnerability. Among the services offered are guidance on benefits such as BPC/LOAS, referrals to CRAS and CREAS, support in the flow of high-cost medications, and coordination with other public services, such as CAPS and reference hospitals.

Active listening

For Lorena, active listening makes a difference in the daily life of the Polyclinic. “When someone arrives here, they often carry much more than a health problem. Listening without haste and without judgment makes the person trust and share things they didn’t even know could be helped,” she states.

This approach creates bonds and allows for the identification of situations that could compromise treatment, such as financial difficulties, lack of support networks, family abandonment, or even ignorance about rights.

Appointments

Currently, the Social Service of the Lago de Tucuruí Polyclinic conducts an average of 220 appointments per month, all free of charge. “Our goal is to ensure dignity. Each guidance, each referral is a step for the person to feel more supported and able to continue treatment,” reinforces the professional.

Anyone can seek the Social Service department, even without a medical referral. Just come to the unit. “We are here to be a bridge between the user’s needs and the resources they can access,” adds Lorena.
