"Materialist Loves" premieres at Cine Líbero Luxardo this Thursday (29)
The feature film "A Beautiful Life," by award-winning director Costa-Gavras, also premieres this week. The films "Iracema - An Amazonian Affair" and "Cazuza, Good News" will continue to screen until August 6.
With two major premieres, Cine Líbero Luxardo, located in Belém, kicks off its new programming this Thursday (29). Among the highlights this week is the film "Materialist Loves" by Oscar-nominated director Celine Song and the feature "A Beautiful Life," by the also award-winning director, Costa-Gavras. In addition to the premieres, the films "Iracema - An Amazonian Affair" and "Cazuza, Good News," which were successful in their first week of screening, will continue to be part of the cinema's programming.
Directed by Céline Song, nominated for an Oscar, Golden Globe, and BAFTA for "Past Lives," the film "Materialist Loves" premieres this Thursday (29) at 5 PM at Cine Líbero Luxardo. In the film, matchmaker Lucy (Dakota Johnson) meets Harry (Pedro Pascal), a perfect match, the ideal dream, but finds herself shaken by an old imperfect love when she reunites with John (Chris Evans), her ex-boyfriend. After successfully conducting nine weddings, will Lucy's next one be her own?
The film has been well received by critics and audiences alike, boasting an 86% approval rating on the review site Rotten Tomatoes. The film has drawn attention for its original screenplay - which deviates from clichéd romantic comedies - and for the striking performances and chemistry between actors Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal.
The film "A Beautiful Life," directed by Costa-Gavras, follows a philosophical dialogue between a doctor specializing in palliative care, Augustin Masset (Kad Merad), and a renowned writer and philosopher, Fabrice Toussaint (Denis Podalydés). The plot examines life and death through the stories of different patients with terminal illnesses, such as a wealthy Parisian socialite, a mother with the last wish to eat oysters and drink a Breizh’Cadet wine by the sea, and a matriarch who prefers her assisted death to be kept a secret.
Each character is a whole universe of emotions, fears, and interests that will guide Toussaint in confronting his own anxieties. Masset is the one who leads the artist through these numerous encounters that also put into perspective the feelings of immortality of youth and the motivation to keep fighting and living despite obstacles. The feature premiered at one of the most prestigious festivals in the world, the San Sebastián Festival in Spain, and at the Rio Festival in Brazil.
Double features of "Iracema - An Amazonian Affair" and "Cazuza, Good News":
The feature "Iracema - An Amazonian Affair" was censored by the military dictatorship in 1974 due to its critical content regarding the treatment of the Amazon and the social and environmental impacts caused by the construction of the Trans-Amazonian Highway in Pará. Even while censored, the feature was included in the list of the 100 best Brazilian films by the Brazilian Association of Film Critics (Abraccine).
The documentary drama has collected numerous national and international awards; among them: from the Brasília Festival 1980 (Best Film, Best Actress for Edna de Cássia, Best Supporting Actress for Conceição Senna, and Best Editing for Eva Grundman and Jorge Bodanzky); from the Minas Gerais Cinematographic Critics Association 1978 (Best Film of the Year in a showcase of banned films); and international achievements such as the Prix George Sadoul (Paris), Adolf Grimme Preis (Germany), Encomio Taormina (Italy), and the Special Prize at the Cannes Festival for Reencontre Film et Jeunesse.
In the story, we follow the young Iracema (Edna de Cássia) and her journey along the Trans-Amazonian Highway, a road that, in 1974, symbolized the optimism of military propaganda. Alongside Tião Brasil Grande (Paulo César Pereio), she embarks on a journey that takes her from the streets of Belém into the depths of the Amazon rainforest. Along the way, the film exposes the complex power dynamics, exploitation, and violence that permeate the region.
Meanwhile, the documentary "Cazuza, Good News" dives into one of the most intense and creative periods of singer and songwriter Cazuza's life. Between 1987 and early 1989, already diagnosed with AIDS and facing the worsening of the disease, the artist experienced a true artistic explosion: he released three albums, won numerous awards, and performed over 40 shows with the show "Time Doesn't Stop," which would become a landmark in his career.
Directed by Nilo Romero — musician, personal friend, and musical director of Cazuza's last show — and co-directed by Roberto Moret, the film features rare archival footage, never-before-seen videos, and emotional testimonies from names like Ney Matogrosso, Gilberto Gil, Frejat, and Lucinha Araújo. The feature reveals Cazuza's creative urgency, his struggle to leave a legacy, and the profound impact he had on his generation.
