The Tapajós Regional Hospital (HRT), a unit of the Government of Pará located in Itaituba, in the southwestern region of Pará, recorded an unprecedented event in its history: the first triplet birth, with specialized structure and multiprofessional assistance. The birth, which will be 30 days old at the end of July, marks the consolidation of the unit as a reference in high-risk obstetrics. Since the hospital's inauguration in 2022, there have been 931 births, with 95 in the first half of 2025.
The babies Joaquim, Josué, and Jorge, children of Daniela Peres Brito and Jonas Sousa de Sales, were born healthy, without the need for admission to a Neonatal ICU, and were able to be discharged a few days after birth. The mother, however, remained hospitalized longer for post-surgical follow-up, with full support from the care team.
“Since I discovered my pregnancy, I was referred to the Regional Hospital, as no other hospital has the structure that HRT has. Thank God we have HRT; the municipality only has to gain. I was well assisted by three pediatricians. I thank God for everything going well. My children were born healthy and did not need ICU, even though three separate beds were prepared for them. The feeling is one of gratitude,” said Daniela.
The birth, performed by cesarean section, was conducted by obstetrician Jean Cleyton Silva Guimarães, with support from three pediatricians, Fabiola Wanghon, Karla Araújo, and Janderson Figueira, as well as an anesthetist, surgical assistant, nurses, and nursing technicians.
“Cases like this require detailed planning and a robust structure. Each baby had an exclusive pediatrician, and the team organized itself to act quickly and accurately. It was a collective effort of excellence,” explained Jean Cleyton.
Pediatrician Karla Araújo emphasizes that integrated care was decisive for the good outcome. “Multiple births are rare and delicate. Seeing all three babies born healthy and safely is a source of pride for all of us,” she stated.
For the hospital's technical director, Dr. Lucas Vergani, the birth of the triplets is a direct reflection of the capacity of the state public network to provide specialized care with quality.
“Performing the hospital's first triplet birth with this positive outcome is the result of the structure set up by the State Government and the commitment of our teams. This is the SUS functioning with technique and humanization,” he reinforced.
Managed by the Social Institute Mais Saúde, the Tapajós Regional Hospital is a unit of the Pará State Department of Public Health (Sespa). A reference for the six municipalities in the Tapajós region, the hospital offers medium and high complexity care in areas such as traumatology, internal medicine, general surgery, and high-risk obstetrics.
