HRPM promotes environmental preservation action for long-term patients
On last Thursday (17), the Regional Public Hospital of Marajó (HRPM), in Breves, promoted a humanization action combined with environmental awareness, aimed at long-term users. The initiative was carried out by the Sustainability Commission (CS) of the unit, in homage to the "Day of Forest Protection," and took place in the hospital garden. Users unable to move to the external area were also included in the activities through adapted actions.
A member of the CS, nutritionist Renata Feio, the technical responsible (RT) for the Nutrition and Dietetics Service (SND) of HRPM, explained that the action was held in homage to the "Day of Forest Protection" and was specially designed for long-term patients, who had the symbolic and affective opportunity to plant a pink ipe seedling.
"A snack adapted to the patients' needs was served, with options such as protein shake, baked potato sticks, and hamburger. This action was very significant, as the contact with the sensory space, the garden, and the orchard helped the patients relieve the anxiety generated by hospitalization. Seeing their smiles and joy was extremely rewarding. This therapeutic approach was very welcome to promote physical and emotional well-being," she emphasized.
Approval - Edilson Aleixo Fernandes, 39, who has been hospitalized at HRPM for two months facing a chronic kidney condition, was one of the patients benefited by the action. During this period, he received continuous support from the multidisciplinary team of the unit, care that he is keen to praise and acknowledge.
"I was very happy with the surprise; it was something really important and unexpected. We learned about the importance of protecting forests. We need to take care of our trees!" he highlighted.
Edilson adds that the initiative had a special meaning, as feelings such as loneliness, anxiety, and longing for family can arise during hospitalization. "But the HRPM team welcomes us. From the reception to the cleaning staff, the kitchen, the nursing... everyone deserves praise. I have nothing to complain about. It was very emotional," he concluded.
Hospital garden - HRPM has the largest pesticide-free hospital garden in the public hospital network of the state, with an area of 180 m², which includes hydroponic cultivation – a soil-less technique based on nutrient solution. The project has a composting system for organic waste and promotes workshops for staff, patients, and companions, encouraging home cultivation of vegetables as a sustainable and income-generating alternative. The hospital's commitment to producing healthy food and environmental preservation has already generated positive impacts, encouraging the creation of home, community, and school gardens.
The "Hospital Garden Project" has gained national recognition by receiving the "Friend of the Environment Award," granted by the Health Department of the State of São Paulo, which values socio-environmental initiatives in SUS units.
