The Octávio Lobo Children's Oncology Hospital (Hoiol) will be present at the 57th edition of the International Pediatric Oncology Congress (SIOP), which will be held from October 20 to 23 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The public health institution of the Pará government, a reference in the treatment of childhood and adolescent cancer in the Northern region of Brazil, will present three scientific works that reflect the institution's commitment to research, humanization, and continuous improvement of care. Pediatric oncologist, researcher, and technical director of the health institution, Alayde Vieira, will present the works at the conference.

One of the projects that will stand out at the event addresses the efficiency and quality of the Cancer Hospital Registry (RHC) of the unit. Nationally recognized, the RHC of the Octávio Lobo Hospital is one of the most comprehensive in the country, maintaining updated and reliable data that serve as a basis for epidemiological studies and the improvement of oncology care strategies.

The presentation will also detail Hoiol's participation in a pilot project, the Registry, developed in partnership with the State Health Department of Pará (Sespa). Alayde Wanderley explains that "the initiative aims to implement an integrated database that will allow real-time access to clinical and statistical information about the oncology patients treated, consolidating an important tool for health management."

Another selected work focuses on the experiences of mothers of children undergoing oncology treatment. The study takes a sensitive look at the daily lives of these caregivers, highlighting their perceptions, anxieties, and needs. "For the hospital's multidisciplinary team, listening to those who are next to the patient is essential to provide more welcoming care. It is a topic that usually remains on the sidelines. We tend to focus almost exclusively on the patient, but the caregiver also needs support and a voice," emphasized the technical director.

The third work approved by the SIOP evaluation committee deals with the performance of the Death Committee within the unit. The research analyzes patient outcomes based on reflections on the entire care pathway, from pre-hospital care to hospitalization and post-treatment. The proposal is to understand whether deaths could have been avoided, whether there were actions that require review, or whether the severity of the disease was truly irreversible. "Each death analysis is, in practice, a learning opportunity. The goal is to improve processes, identify failures, and strengthen the culture of continuous improvement, always focusing on patient safety," reinforced the pediatric oncologist.

The three studies were selected in a competitive process that gathered more than 5,000 works from around the world. This is the first time that a scientific production from the Northern region has achieved such visibility at the International Pediatric Oncology Congress. The event is held annually and brings together internationally renowned speakers, researchers, and institutions dedicated to discussing the most urgent issues in current pediatric oncology.

Alayde Vieira emphasizes that, although the presentation is made by a single representative, the projects reflect the joint effort of various teams at the hospital, involving doctors, nurses, quality professionals, researchers, and RHC technicians. "For the institution, bringing this scientific production to one of the most relevant stages of world oncology represents not only recognition but also an opportunity to exchange experiences, absorb new practices, and reaffirm the commitment to provide the best possible care to children and adolescents undergoing cancer treatment," she highlighted.

Service: Accredited as a High Complexity Oncology Unit, the Children's Oncology Hospital is a reference in the Amazon region for the specialized diagnosis and treatment of childhood and adolescent cancer, in the age group from 0 to 19 years old. The unit is managed by the Institute Diretrizes (ID), under a management contract with the State Department of Public Health (Sespa), and serves patients from the 144 municipalities of Pará.
