Environmental education and care for nature mark Ideflor-Bio's actions in the Algodoal APA
Activities on the well-known Maiandeua Island, in Maracanã, northeastern Pará, in July, include actions at Praia da Princesa, the pier, and the central square of the tourist village.

The Institute for Forest Development and Biodiversity of Pará (Ideflor-Bio) promotes an intense environmental education program in the Environmental Protection Area (APA) Algodoal-Maiandeua, in Maracanã, northeastern Pará. The action is part of the Summer Operation 2025, coordinated by the Government of Pará. The activities, which began on July 4, will continue until August 5, with actions at Praia da Princesa, the pier, and the central square of the village of Algodoal, three points of highest tourist flow in the APA.

The initiative is carried out by the Management of the Administrative Region of the Northeast (GRNE) focusing on raising awareness among residents, visitors, and especially children, about the importance of environmental conservation. Educational games, scavenger hunts, donation of educational games, and community clean-up efforts make up the program, always on Sundays and during the main visitation days of the island.
“We have noticed a great interest from children and families in participating in the activities. Playfulness has been an effective way to talk about the importance of nature, the correct disposal of waste, and care for coastal ecosystems,” highlighted Adriana Gomes, environmental management technician at Ideflor-Bio. In addition to recreational activities, educational materials such as booklets, caps, eco-bags, reusable cups, and sustainable giveaways are also being distributed.

Awareness - The proposal, according to Ideflor-Bio, is to associate leisure with ecological awareness, taking advantage of the increased tourist flow in the summer to reinforce preservation messages. The GRNE teams work directly with vacationers, guiding them on the conscious use of natural resources and the importance of environmentally correct practices during their stay on the island.

“Our work is continuous in the APA, but during the summer, we intensify educational actions as a strategy to combat the environmental impacts that unregulated tourism can cause,” explained Raimunda Araújo, manager of the Administrative Region of the Northeast at Ideflor-Bio. According to her, the involvement of the local community has also been essential for the success of the activities, especially in the clean-up efforts.

About the UC - The APA Algodoal-Maiandeua is one of the most visited Conservation Units (UC) in Pará and houses sensitive ecosystems such as mangroves, restingas, and dunes. Ideflor-Bio's work in the region seeks to promote the sustainable use of the area, ensuring the maintenance of its ecological attributes and the quality of life of the traditional populations living on the island.

The actions of Ideflor-Bio reinforce the commitment of the Government of Pará to the conservation of biodiversity and the development of a culture of sustainability in the coastal regions of the state, always focusing on raising awareness and strengthening the bond between society and the environment.
