The integrated security teams operating in the "Operation Curupira", coordinated by the Secretary of Public Security and Social Defense (Segup), along with the Secretary of Environment, Climate and Sustainability (Semas), identified areas of environmental exploitation in the region of São Félix do Xingu. The actions are part of the inspections and strategic actions to prevent environmental crimes committed against the Amazon rainforest.

The Secretary of Public Security and Social Defense, Ualame Machado, emphasizes the importance of the actions carried out by the operation in combating environmental crimes in Pará and the importance of the integration of security forces, in support of the inspections carried out by the Semas teams.

"Operation Curupira has been ongoing for two years, and during this period we have made progress in identifying and preventing deforestation of the forest and other environmental crimes committed, especially in areas we have mapped as being the most critical regarding illegal mining and timber exploitation. With this, in yet another inspection, we were able to identify new locations and thus investigate the possible responsible parties and apply the necessary punishments against those who act against the environment," said the head of Segup.

Inspection and seizures - On last Monday, the 7th, public security agents supporting Semas inspections in an area 144 km from the city of São Félix do Xingu identified hotspots of timber exploitation through a complaint. The exploited area is located within a private property that has the Rural Environmental Registry (CAR), which among the benefits offered, provides assistance in combating deforestation.

In the action, the security teams conducted inspections around the property and found an extensive deforested area. A total of 15.267m³ of Castanheira wood was found, which was seized and rendered unusable by the Military Fire Brigade team. At the time, the teams also identified other species of wood and areas previously marked and ready to be cut down.

The area found is being monitored and inspected by the security teams, who are already conducting rounds to identify and arrest those responsible.

Productivity - The inspections of Operation Curupira, through the security forces, have already resulted in more than 90 arrests in flagrant; 27 bail amounts set; 52 police inquiries initiated; more than 180 summons issued; 220 infraction notices; 58 circumstantial occurrence reports (TCOs), 679 ammunition seized; more than 200 firearms seized, and also, more than 1,100 machinery seized.

Operation Curupira - Launched in 2023 by the State Government, aims to combat illegal deforestation and the exploitation of natural resources of the Amazon rainforest. The integrated teams of the State Secretary of Environment and Sustainability (Semas); Military, Civil and Scientific police; Military Fire Brigade and the State Secretary of Public Security and Social Defense (Segup), operate in three action bases installed in the municipality of São Félix do Xingu, southeastern Pará, and also in the city of Novo Progresso (southwest) and Uruará (west).
