Roseane Dias Martins, a resident of Cametá and pregnant with twins, was admitted to the Barcarena Maternal and Child Hospital (HMIB) on May 22, and was hospitalized two days later in the adult ICU due to premature labor and hypertensive disorder of pregnancy.

She remained in the ICU until June 5, when she entered active labor and was transferred to the pre-delivery, delivery, and post-delivery room (PPP), where she progressed to a normal delivery, and to everyone's surprise, three babies were born, not just twins as they had imagined.

Due to their prematurity and low weight, the babies - two girls and one boy - were sent to the neonatal ICU, where they received care from a multidisciplinary team in a humanized manner. The babies were named Ravi, Rafaela, and Rosiane.

Among the therapeutic methods used in the care of the babies, the director of HMIB, Poliana Rodrigues, mentioned the Kangaroo Method, the use of a hammock, and the neonatal bath, which promote comfort, well-being, and healthy development of the newborns.

The Kangaroo Method also provides thermal and physical security to the babies

Kangaroo Method – “The Kangaroo Method is a practice based on skin-to-skin contact between the baby and their parents. The newborn is placed vertically on the chest of the mother or father, in direct contact with the skin, wrapped in a blanket or fabric that provides thermal and physical security,” explained the director of HMIB.

According to Poliana Rodrigues, among the benefits of this method are stabilization of heart and respiratory rates; improvement of oxygenation and body temperature; increased emotional bonding with parents, as well as stimulation of breastfeeding, reduction of hospitalization time, and neonatal stress.

Hammock - Regarding this small hammock used inside the incubator, Poliana Rodrigues explained that it is a technique that simulates the intrauterine environment, providing the baby with a more flexed, cozy position with less external stimulation. “Among the benefits, it improves posture and body alignment, reduces pain and stress; promotes a more peaceful and deep sleep; and stimulates neurodevelopment in preterm infants,” she informed.

Neonatal Bath - Also called therapeutic bathing, it consists of submerging the baby in warm water inside a rounded container, simulating the intrauterine sensation. It can be performed by professionals or during care moments with the parents.

According to Poliana Rodrigues, the neonatal bath brings benefits such as relaxation and relief from colic and muscle tension, reduction of irritability, improvement in sleep patterns; stimulation of emotional bonding during the bath; and emotional and physiological self-regulation of the newborn.

Welcoming and Humanization – The mother of the triplets, Roseane Dias Martins, said she was well received at the hospital from the moment she arrived. “I needed to stay in the ICU and the team provided me with all the assistance. I went through several departments and in all of them, I received all the help I needed,” she stated.

She shared that with the birth of the babies came a mix of feelings, especially when she discovered they were triplets and that she and her husband would have another baby to care for. She recalled that the babies went through the neonatal ICU, then to the ICU, but with the support and care that the team provided, they were able to achieve their goal. “Today, my babies are well, with a discharge forecast, and healthy thanks to this hospital and this team that gave me all the support. I feel very happy and grateful, my municipality does not have a hospital with this structure, and here I received all the support I needed,” celebrated the mother of the triplets.
