The islands and the waterways surrounding Belém have increased police presence throughout the month of July as part of Operation Summer 2025, coordinated by the Secretary of Public Security and Social Defense (Segup). The action mobilizes the Public Security River Group (GFLU) and other river agencies from state and municipal spheres, focusing on the prevention of crimes and nautical accidents, as well as inspections in bathing areas and high-traffic locations, such as the islands of Combú, Cotijuba, Prainha, as well as ports, marinas, and the waterfront of the capital of Pará.

The operation intensifies the presence of agents especially on weekends, the period of highest movement in the riverside areas. According to the director of GFLU, Colonel José Vilhena, a river base has been installed on the Guamá River, in front of Praça Princesa Isabel, with support from the Brazilian Navy and the operation of a river police station to handle occurrences.

“We will have a fixed team operating daily, with reinforced patrolling to ensure the safety of those crossing the rivers and also during the return from trips to the islands of the Metropolitan Region of Belém,” said the colonel.

Floating Police Station and Services

A GFLU vessel is anchored on the Guamá River as a support point for the agencies integrated into the operation, featuring an active River Police Station for incident reporting. The joint operation brings together teams from GFLU, the River Police Station (DPFLU), and the Independent River Police Company (Cipflu), which conduct daily patrols on the rivers that make up the Metropolitan Region, with support from the Itinerant Police Station.

Results from the First Weekend

In the first weekend of the operation, between June 28 and 29, 15 vessels, 21 jet skis, and 45 commercial establishments, including bars and restaurants in the riverside areas, were inspected.

More than 40 agents participated in the inspections, which will continue until the first weekend of August.

“Although we have 50 locations covered by Operation Summer throughout Pará, we are reinforcing attention in the Metropolitan Region so that residents and visitors feel safe, whether on the islands, in the rivers, on the roads, or in urban areas. Our goal is to ensure peace of mind for everyone enjoying this leisure period,” emphasized the Secretary of Public Security, Ualame Machado.

Integration and Logistics

In the Metropolitan Region of Belém, six vessels are directly involved in patrolling the rivers. Throughout the state, more than 80 vessels have been mobilized for ostensive and preventive actions throughout July, providing coverage at strategic points defined by Segup.
