The films "Silence of the Oysters”, “Ernest Cole: Found and Lost” and “Towards an Unknown Land” are the premieres of the week at Cine Líbero Luxardo, in Belém. The films address themes such as forced displacement, political resistance, and environmental tragedies in Brazil and around the world.

First fiction feature by award-winning documentary filmmaker Marcos Pimentel, “The Silence of the Oysters” premiered in June addressing human losses and environmental tragedies in Minas Gerais. Starring Bárbara Colen and Lavínia Castelari, the film was highlighted at the 26th edition of the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival.

Combining fictional narrative and real images of the environmental disasters that occurred in the mining towns of Mariana and Brumadinho, the feature follows the journey of Kaylane, a young girl raised in a workers' village of a mining company. After a series of losses, she fights to survive and resist amidst the mud, dust, and silence that surrounds her.

The work is moving for the sensitivity with which it portrays the impacts of mining on small communities, questioning the boundaries between fiction and reality.

Journey - Shown in the Directors' Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival (in France) and nominated for the SACD Award, the film “Towards an Unknown Land” follows the journey of two Palestinian cousins who are refugees in Athens (Greece). Chatila and Reda dream of a better life in Germany. To fulfill this desire, they resort to extreme means in an attempt to obtain fake passports. Along the way, they face ethical dilemmas and are forced to give up their identities.

The direction is by Mahdi Fleifel, a filmmaker born in Dubai and based in Denmark. He gained international recognition with the documentary “A World That Is Not Ours” (2012), about the daily life of his family in a refugee camp in southern Lebanon — a film that won the Peace Film Award at the Berlin Film Festival (Germany). The idea for “Towards an Unknown Land” arose from his experience and research with Palestinian refugees in Greece.

Denunciation - From director Raoul Peck, nominated for an Oscar for “I Am Not Your Negro”, the documentary “Ernest Cole: Found and Lost” rescues the trajectory of Ernest Cole, the first black South African photographer to internationally denounce the horrors of apartheid - the official regime of racial segregation implemented in South Africa between 1948 and 1994.

In 1967, at the age of 27, Cole published the book “House of Bondage”, which forced him into exile in the United States and Europe. The production narrates his life, his artistic activism, and the indignation at the West's complicity with the South African regime. One of the central points of the film was the discovery, in 2017, of about 60,000 unpublished negatives by Cole, in a bank vault in Sweden.

Acclaimed by critics, the feature has a 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with an average score of 7.4/10. The film also received the prestigious Golden Eye Award at the Cannes Film Festival.

Terror - Cine Líbero Luxardo will also screen “Empty Building”, a psychological horror film shot in Guarapari (ES). The film follows Luna (Lorena Corrêa), a young woman who, on the last day of Carnival, begins the search for her missing mother. Her investigation leads her to an old building, seemingly abandoned, where she encounters dark secrets and supernatural presences.

With an oppressive atmosphere and a narrative filled with tension, the feature stands out for exploring the contrast between the carnival euphoria and the disturbing silence of the post-party. Awarded at the 28th Tiradentes Film Show, with the Portrait Films Award, which secured its national distribution, the feature also stars Caio Macedo, Gilda Nomacce, and Rejane Arruda.
