The Polyclinic Carajás Miguel Chamon, in Marabá, has significantly expanded access for the population of southeastern Pará to specialized eye health. With the ophthalmology service, the unit offers consultations, exams, and procedures that assist in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases that compromise vision.

Natanael Firmino, 24 years old, a resident of Itupiranga, near the Tucuruí lake, was referred to the unit after noticing a reduction in the quality of his vision. "I was seeing everything a bit blurry, which made my daily activities quite difficult. After the exam, the doctor explained that I need to wear glasses to correct the problem and prescribed the appropriate lens, which will greatly improve my quality of life," he stated.

Stephanny da Conceição, 8 years old, also a resident of Itupiranga, was seen at the Polyclinic accompanied by her mother, Aline da Conceição. "I am happy with the service we received here. Stephanny had told me that she wasn't seeing well, and we were worried. The team was attentive, explained everything properly, and conducted the exam with great care. Now I will arrange for her glasses," explained the mother.

At the Government of Pará unit, the ophthalmologist conducts a detailed evaluation of eye health, identifying and treating conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, infections, and inflammations, among other diseases. In addition, appropriate glasses and personalized guidance are prescribed, ensuring comprehensive and humanized follow-up.

Joabe Lopes, executive director of the Polyclinic, emphasizes that the ophthalmology service is the result of a continuous effort to provide essential care to the population of the region. "With consultations, exams, and specialized treatments, we have reduced waiting times and expanded access to quality assistance, all with humanization, welcome, and efficiency," the professional emphasized.

Take Care of Your Vision

According to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), 19% of the Brazilian population has some degree of visual impairment. Of this total, more than 6 million people face severe limitations in vision.

For ophthalmologist Marcos Milhomem, who works at the unit managed by the Institute of Social and Environmental Health of the Amazon (ISSAA), in partnership with the State Department of Public Health (Sespa), prevention is an ally in maintaining eye health. "Vision is our main connection to the world. Ensuring access to quality ophthalmological care is a direct investment in the health and well-being of the population," he reported.

The doctor also warned that, in recent years, prolonged use of screens from cell phones, computers, and other digital devices has become a major concern for eye health, especially among the younger population.

"This excessive exposure can cause visual fatigue, dry eyes, and various discomforts. To reduce the effects, it is important to take regular breaks during use, maintain good hydration of the eyes, and ensure adequate lighting in the environment. In addition, periodic consultations with a specialist are essential to prevent problems and ensure early diagnosis when necessary," explained the specialist.

Marcos also reinforces the importance of simple daily care to maintain eye health. "Avoid rubbing your eyes, use UV protection glasses when exposed to the sun, and maintain a balanced diet rich in vitamins A, C, E, and omega-3, which help protect vision," detailed the doctor.

Regulation - Appointments are regulated by the State Regulation Center, linked to Sespa. To access the services, citizens must seek a Basic Health Unit (UBS), obtain a referral, and present it at the Municipal Health Department of their city, which will register and schedule with the Polyclinic.

Structure: The Polyclinic Carajás is a reference in health in southeastern Pará. The unit offers care in more than 25 medical specialties and performs over 20 types of medium and high complexity exams. The institution also performs low-complexity surgical procedures. All care is 100% free, through the Unified Health System (SUS), with a focus on humanization.
