The Jean Bitar Hospital (HJB), in Belém, hosted on Thursday (5) the opening of the "I Northern Congress on Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery", promoted by the Brazilian Society of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery from the chapters of Amazonas, Pará, and Rondônia. The event brings together specialists from various health fields, such as General Surgery, Digestive System Surgery, Endocrinology, Hepatology, Nutrition, Psychology, among other professionals interested in enhancing clinical and surgical practice.

With an extensive program, the congress began with a pre-event activity held in the HJB auditorium. Invited doctors watched live the transmission of bariatric surgeries performed in the surgical center of the unit, conducted by surgeon Carlos Armando.

The program continues on June 6 and 7, in the auditorium of the Princesa Louçã Hotel, in Belém. The event will feature lectures from renowned specialists, in addition to providing a space for networking, experience exchange, and encouragement of innovation. The participation of residents and students is also encouraged to promote scientific and technical updates among professionals in the field.

According to Carlos Armando Santos, surgeon and coordinator of the Zero Obesity Program of the Government of Pará, the choice of HJB to open the congress reinforces the strategic role of the hospital in executing the program. "Surgeries are being performed normally in the surgical block and transmitted to the auditorium, where professionals from all over the Northern region can interact, ask questions, and refine their techniques. Our goal is to maintain bariatric surgery at the highest safety standards," the doctor emphasized.

Zero Obesity - The Jean Bitar Hospital is a reference in the treatment of obesity in Pará through the Zero Obesity program, an initiative of the State Government in partnership with the State Department of Public Health (Sespa). Launched in September 2020, the program offers free bariatric surgeries, in addition to clinical follow-up and multidisciplinary support for patients.

One of the beneficiaries is Jéssica Matos, 32 years old, a housewife, living in Belém. She underwent surgery seven months ago after being diagnosed with grade 3 obesity, pre-diabetes, and fatty liver. "Before the program, I weighed 135 kg. Today I weigh 100 kg and want to reach 70 kg. I receive monthly follow-up with doctors, a psychologist, a nutritionist, and other professionals. It is a long journey, but it is worth it. The result compensates," she stated.

Since the launch of the program until the end of the first quarter of 2025, more than 2,031 bariatric surgeries have already been performed, benefiting patients from various regions of the state. The program offers a comprehensive approach, with clinical evaluations, exams, consultations, and pre and post-operative support, promoting quality of life and well-being for participants.

Service - The Jean Bitar Hospital is part of the public health network of the Government of Pará and provides outpatient and hospital assistance in medium and high complexity, with care for transgender patients, in addition to clinical and surgical cases related to metabolic and gastrointestinal diseases.

The HJB is located at Rua Cônego Jerônimo Pimentel, nº 543, in the Umarizal neighborhood, in Belém.
