Cosanpa advances with the largest Sewage Treatment Plant in Pará, in Belém
The 'ETE UNA' project is already 87% completed and is expected to benefit 90,000 residents

The Pará Sanitation Company (Cosanpa) continues to advance in the expansion of basic sanitation in Belém with the construction of the UNA Sewage Treatment Plant (ETE), which will be the largest in the state. With 87% of the works completed, the plant is a milestone for the infrastructure of the capital of Pará and one of the main strategic projects of the State Government in preparation for COP30, which will be held in Belém in 2025.
At the center of the new station is the UASB unit (Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket), considered the "heart" of the system, whose structure has already been completed and is currently in the operational testing phase. This technology is responsible for more than 60% of the efficiency of sewage treatment and has the capacity to treat more than 11,000 cubic meters of waste per day, equivalent to about a thousand full water tanks.

With an investment of over R$ 130 million, the ETE UNA will benefit approximately 90,000 residents from ten neighborhoods in Belém, significantly expanding sanitation coverage in the capital. For the engineer and project supervisor at Cosanpa, Susan Alves, this is a crucial project for the city. "There is no other station larger than this in the state. It is fundamental for public health, the environment, and quality of life. With it, we will treat sewage properly, avoiding pollution in the Guajará Bay," she explained.
At this moment, the work is focused on the Raw Sewage Pumping Station, where dredging of the channel through which the sewage arrives is being carried out, in addition to the installation of gates and screening — essential stages of primary treatment. After this, the sewage will go through secondary and tertiary stages, which include the disinfection process, ensuring an efficiency of up to 99% in the removal of organic load before safe return to the environment.

The forecast is that the ETE UNA will be completed by September 2025, establishing a new standard for basic sanitation in Pará and directly contributing to the depollution of Guajará Bay and the improvement of the quality of life for the residents of Belém.
"The investment in ETE UNA demonstrates our commitment to basic sanitation and the well-being of the people of Pará. It is a structural work that represents a new era for Belém, uniting responsibility, technical efficiency, and sustainability," said the president of Cosanpa, José Fernando de Mendonça Gomes Júnior.
