The XIV edition of the Pará Open Games (Joapa) started with excitement and medals this Friday (30), in the host city of Ponta de Pedras, for the Marajó II Regional. On the first day of competitions, the first champions were already defined in the sports of table tennis and men's handball.

The athlete Agnes Tavares, representing Ponta de Pedras, won the gold medal in women's table tennis and secured a spot in the state phase, which will be held in Belém. The silver went to Raiana Corrêa Sidônio from the municipality of Muaná. In men's handball, the team from Cachoeira do Arari took home the bronze.

The Marajó II Regional continues until June 1st, organized by the Government of Pará, through the State Secretariat of Sports and Leisure (Seel).

The secretary of Seel, Cássio Andrade, highlighted the participation of the delegations right on the first day.

“It is a joy to see all the athletes practicing what they love: sports. Joapa is integration, it is unity, it is an exchange of experiences. From here, champions will emerge for the state stage, but also athletes with new cultural and social learnings. I congratulate our medalists in table tennis and the handball athletes for their achievement,” said the secretary.

Participating municipalities of the Marajó II Regional

Six municipalities are represented in this stage: Ponta de Pedras, Soure, Cachoeira do Arari, Muaná, Salvaterra, and Santa Cruz do Arari. The competitions involve the sports of futsal, beach soccer, volleyball, handball, and table tennis.

The table tennis champion, Agnes Tavares, celebrated the unprecedented achievement in her third participation in the Games.
“In the first two times, I won silver. This time, I achieved my long-dreamed gold. I am very happy to represent my municipality in the state phase, especially because it will be held in Belém during COP 30. I thank the State Government and Seel for their support of sports in the countryside. I know the difficulties we, athletes from the countryside, face. Therefore, seeing all this structure and dedicated team makes a big difference for us,” said the athlete.

Joapa values sports and promotes inclusion

Joapa encompasses all 144 municipalities in Pará, divided into ten regional stages. The goal is to promote sports and social inclusion through sports practice. In addition to medals, the competition also awards municipalities with the best performance with the Efficiency Trophy.
