The Legislative Assembly of the State of Pará (Alepa) approved, this Tuesday (27), the Bill that restructures the State Secretariat for the Environment and Sustainability (Semas). The restructuring includes the creation of 557 permanent positions and 66 commissioned positions. This measure represents a historic milestone in the modernization of the State's environmental management, strengthening the structure of the secretariat and creating new positions for permanent staff.

The modernization strengthens Semas' institutional performance in the face of increasing demands related to environmental oversight, land regularization, environmental licensing, bioeconomy, and climate change. With the restructuring, it was approved that the agency will be renamed "State Secretariat for the Environment, Climate, and Sustainability" and will incorporate new academic qualifications into its workforce.

“The approval of this project is a very important step for strengthening environmental management in Pará. We are modernizing the structure of Semas to respond more efficiently to the challenges of the environmental agenda. This restructuring reinforces our commitment to a technical, solid environmental policy that meets the expectations of our State and the world,” said the Secretary of State for the Environment and Sustainability, Raul Protázio Romão.

The measure is essential to enhance the execution of public policies such as the State Plan for the Amazon Now (PEAA) and the State Policy on Climate Change (PEMC), as well as to expand the role of the secretariat as coordinator of the Bioeconomy Plan (PlanBio) and the Management Committee of the State System on Climate Change (Coges-Clima).

The decision also aimed to prepare for consolidating institutional functions for the upcoming events, including the 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30), which will be held in the capital of Pará in November of this year.
