Parauapebas hosts 'Workshop Challenges and Opportunities for Responsible Tourism'
The initiative aims to guide managers of tourist destinations on management actions, encouraging the adoption of sustainable best practices.

Promoted by the State Secretariat of Tourism (Setur), Parauapebas hosts the Workshop Challenges and Opportunities for Responsible Tourism from May 13 to 15. The initiative aims to guide managers of tourist destinations regarding the importance of implementing responsible management actions, encouraging the adoption of best practices in sustainability by companies, service providers, public managers, and the local community.
Among the highlighted themes of the event is the relationship between Tourism, Sustainability, Communities, and Safety. The program includes lectures on the topics 'Confronting Sexual Violence Against Children and Adolescents in Tourism: awareness and guidance on prevention and action in cases of rights violations in the tourism context' and 'How Tourism Can Generate Positive Impacts on the Destination: exchange of experiences, best practices, and collective construction of solutions focused on sustainability and inclusion.'

It also includes a meeting with the Municipal Secretariat of Tourism for institutional alignment and joint definition of mobilization and execution strategies for the action, as well as the distribution of posters on the theme. The agenda involved a technical visit to the Carajás Route, known as one of the richest regions in biodiversity, with about 1.2 million hectares of preserved forests.
The Carajás region has the largest iron cave park in the world, with over a thousand cataloged caves – the National Park of Ferruginous Fields – in addition to trails, viewpoints, savannah, and waterfalls. During the visit, the goal was to test a responsible perspective, observing the tourist attraction critically, that is, identifying challenges and proposing sustainable and inclusive solutions for improving the tourist experience.

Parauapebas is the first municipality to receive the action in 2025. “In the municipalities, the project operates through workshops and practical workshops, technical visits that bring together managers, entrepreneurs, sector professionals, and the community. We discuss how tourism can be more inclusive, safe, and transformative, focusing on themes such as the protection of children and adolescents, sustainability, and local economy. The realization of these workshops is essential to strengthen the tourism partner network, raise awareness among those involved, and collectively build solutions that respect and value our destinations, because good tourism is the one that cares, protects, and leaves a positive legacy for future generations,” explained Edmê Pina, planning and management technician in tourism at Setur.
‘Responsible tourism is one that respects people, the environment, local culture, and promotes the sustainable development of territories. In Responsible Tourism, everyone wins: residents, visitors, and the destination itself,” added Edmê.

PROJECT - The action is part of the project “Responsible Tourism is What We Want,” a strategy of Setur to contribute to the strengthening and growth of tourism. The project includes lectures, workshops, and guiding activities that promote Responsible Tourism as a way to mitigate the negative impacts of tourism activities on Pará's destinations.
The initiative seeks to guide public and private managers at the municipal, state, and regional levels, as well as involve service providers, entrepreneurs, consultants, professionals in the field, students, and the local community, fostering the debate on a more ethical, sustainable, and inclusive tourism.
