The State Secretariat for Public Security and Social Defense (Segup), through the Directorate of Public Policies and Social Prevention (DPS), intensified preventive actions of the Safe Paths Operation in the municipalities of Parauapebas and Canaã dos Carajás in the first half of May. The operation is nationally coordinated by the National Secretariat of Public Security (Senasp) and focuses on combating violence against children and adolescents throughout the state of Pará.

During the program, strategic actions were carried out in areas of greater vulnerability, such as state and federal highways, bars, nightclubs, hotels, and concert halls. The activities integrated inspection, awareness-raising, and coordination of the local assistance network, aiming to curb abuses and strengthen protection mechanisms for victims.

In both municipalities, 32 establishments were inspected, with two individuals taken to the Civil Police Station on suspicion of providing alcoholic beverages to minors. A total of 582 people participated in the educational and preventive actions, which also included lectures, discussion circles, and institutional arrangements with schools and assistance agencies.

“In addition to preventive and inspection work, assistance to victims is a crucial part of protection actions. This includes access to health services, psychological support, legal guidance, safe shelter, and social reintegration programs. Our goal is to reduce violence rates and ensure the comprehensive protection of children and adolescents throughout the state,” emphasized the Secretary of Public Security, Ualame Machado.

Integration of the protection network

The actions also included meetings with the local assistance network, discussions on the assistance flow, and presentation of the Committee and the State Plan to Combat Violence against Children and Adolescents. Segup technicians presented successful experiences developed in Belém by specialized teams, as well as data provided by the Undersecretariat of Intelligence and Criminal Analysis (Siac), which will serve as a basis for future planning.

In Canaã dos Carajás, there were also lectures aimed at professionals in the hotel network, addressing the types of violence committed against children and adolescents, legal responsibilities, and referral protocols, with a special focus on preventing sexual exploitation.

Integrated and continuous action

The director of the DPS, delegate Ariane Melo, highlighted that the operation acts on two axes: the repressive, with the action of security forces, and the preventive, focusing on awareness and education.

“Segup not only coordinates the operation but also acts directly in prevention, promoting lectures and discussion circles in schools and with the assistance network. The idea is that children and adolescents themselves can recognize situations of violence, especially sexual violence, due to the mobilization around May 18. It is essential to involve municipal and state agencies in this joint effort to ensure a quick, qualified, and humane response to victims,” she stated.

The Safe Paths Operation began on April 30 and will continue until May 30, with scheduled programs also in the Metropolitan Region of Belém, on BR-316, and in the municipalities of Portel and Breves, in the Marajó archipelago.
