Government of Pará visits works considered legacies of COP30 in Belém
This weekend, the State will deliver the Cipriano Santos Canal benefiting around 300,000 people. Work is also progressing in Nova Tamandaré

Six months before the United Nations Conference on Climate Change, which will be held in Belém, the Government of Pará is counting down to the completion of another sanitation and infrastructure project. The Cipriano Santos Canal, in the Terra Firme neighborhood, a peripheral area of the city, will be delivered next weekend and will benefit around 300,000 people. This Thursday (15), Vice Governor Hana Ghassan visited the site and confirmed that the work is in the final phase of finishing, painting, guardrail repairs, and tactile flooring installation. The streets surrounding the canal have already been paved.
"This is a very important work of macro-drainage, water and sewage treatment, road paving, and signaling, which will reduce flooding. Now, property owners have their property valued. This improves the quality of life for the population in the entire area. This is our goal, to work so that people have access to essential services," emphasized Hana Ghassan, who also chairs the State Committee of COP30. "This is a legacy of COP, a project made through the partnership between the State Government and the Federal Government, through the National Bank for Social Development (BNDES). This union is important for us to continue advancing for the population," she added.
This will be the third canal delivered by the Government of Pará this year. The State has already delivered the Timbó and Gentil canals, which are also legacies of COP30 in the capital of Pará.
The Cipriano Santos Canal is part of the macro-drainage project of the Tucunduba Basin, which benefits residents of Terra Firme, Guamá, Canudos, and Marco. The work, carried out by the State Department of Public Works (Seop), included the rectification of 1,114 meters of the canal, sanitation with new water supply networks, sewage disposal, storm drainage, filling of backyards in the surrounding area, four bridges, and seven walkways.

Retiree William Meireles, 64, does not hide his happiness walking on the paved streets next to the canal. "Walking here, before the work, was only possible with water up to the knee and sometimes up to the waist. It looked like a river," he compared. "With the progress of the works, this area no longer floods," he stated.
Resident Aline Gisele Santos, 27, grew up dealing with the flooding around the Cipriano Santos canal. "I even asked to move away from here," she recalled. "Now we don’t need to move anymore. Our house is more valued, we are having something we didn’t have, which is to live with dignity," she continued.

Nova Tamandaré is 75% complete
This Thursday (15), Vice Governor Hana Ghassan also visited the works of Nova Tamandaré. She toured Block I, where the fences have already been removed and the population can already see how the space will look. The work includes sanitation services, sewage disposal, urbanization, landscaping, and canal recovery. It is another investment in quality of life, improving urban mobility and leisure that will last beyond COP 30. A total of 420 people are working on the project.
Trees are being planted in Block I of Nova Tamandaré, which will also feature green spaces that act as sponges, absorbing part of the rainwater before it drains into the drainage system, reducing the risk of flooding. Block I is 137 meters long and has three contemplation areas, tables with board games with wooden benches, trash cans, bike racks, bike lanes, and accessible sidewalks.

The project highlights the importance of Avenida Tamandaré for the population. To this end, the Government of Pará is building community spaces, such as kiosks, contemplative areas and event spaces, bike lanes, playgrounds, pet areas, and outdoor gyms. The services include the urbanization of Praça Onze de Junho and the construction of Praça do Terminal, which will integrate with the New Hydroviário Terminal of Tamandaré.
The Tamandaré Linear Park will be implemented along the canal of Avenida Almirante Tamandaré. The project encompasses part of the historic center of the capital of Pará and important public facilities, such as the Mangal das Garças Zoobotanical Park.

The sanitation of the Tamandaré Basin is executed by the Government of Pará, through the State Department of Public Works (Seop). The work includes a sewage collection network, installation of inspection wells, execution of household branches, demolition and reconstruction of asphalt pavement, as well as the construction of a Sewage Treatment Station, Sewage Pumping Station, and Stormwater Pumping Station.
The Nova Tamandaré project is approximately 1.4 kilometers long. In the area, 2.5 kilometers of asphalt paving, canal recovery, drainage, sewage disposal, landscaping, urbanization, installation of walkways, and the section received five new gates that control the flow of tides in the area.
