On the morning of this Wednesday (14), the Government of Pará, through the State Secretariat for Women (Semu), in conjunction with the Secretariat of Public Security and Social Defense, Civil Police, Military Fire Brigade, and the State Secretariat of Justice, held the ceremony for the signing of the Technical Cooperation Agreement for the creation of the Pará Network of Men for the End of Violence against Women and Girls. The ceremony took place at the Semu headquarters in Belém.

The head of the State Secretariat for Women, Paula Gomes, emphasized the extreme satisfaction, on behalf of Semu, for being the proponents of a pioneering project in Brazil, which has the support of various partner institutions, such as the United Nations Population Fund, allied in strengthening the work being developed for the protection of women in Pará.

“The ACT aims to deconstruct social norms that naturalize violent behaviors. In this sense, promoting men's engagement and actively involving them in this process is extremely enriching. The confrontation and prevention of violence will only truly advance when we start addressing the root causes of the problems, not just the consequences. Therefore, we have a very positive assessment of this moment. Our next step is to expand the project's reach, bringing it to as many municipalities as possible, so that society becomes increasingly aware and prepared to confront the violence that, unfortunately, affects a growing number of women across Brazil,” said the secretary.

The agreement also includes public security agencies that work with prevention and combat actions against crimes against women and girls in Pará. Present at the signing of the agreement, the head of Segup, Ualame Machado, highlighted the commitment of the public security system to the protection of women. “It is a pleasure to be here at the State Secretariat for Women, being able to sign this ACT in collaboration with several agencies, including the security system, and here to reaffirm our commitment to the protection and defense of all women in our State. For us, it is a pleasure to be part of this process, contributing more and more to the reduction of crime rates against women and ensuring them all the rights they are entitled to.”

Pará Network – The project of the Pará Network of Men for the End of Violence against Women and Girls, which began with training in 2024, aimed to train men to become multiplying agents of women's rights, disseminating positive masculinity. Today, with the signing of the cooperation agreement, the network was launched to develop actions throughout the state. The network will have a management group, with the participation of agencies and also of the multipliers, so that actions on masculinity can be developed throughout the year and, furthermore, to work on prevention actions against violence perpetrated by men against girls and women, in order to increasingly reduce violence against women throughout Pará.

“Today's act represents an important milestone in the fight against violence against women and in raising men's awareness of the role they play, alongside women, in building a better world, free of violence. For this to happen, it is essential that they understand their responsibility in promoting harmony and building a more peaceful coexistence. In this context, the State positions itself at the forefront of this innovative project, which can expand to other regions of Pará, contributing to a more conscious, just, and harmonious community,” explained Larissa Machado, public defender and coordinator of the Gender Violence Prevention Center.
