At Hospital Galileu, nursing transforms care into welcome and hope
At the unit, the nursing team represents 60% of the total staff and is a fundamental part of humanized care and the daily operation of the unit
In celebration of Nursing Week, held annually from May 12 to 20, the Galileu State Hospital (HPEG) in Belém emphasizes the importance of the profession in promoting humanized care and the quality of assistance provided to patients. Composed of 184 nurses and nursing technicians, the team represents about 60% of the institution's staff, being considered the backbone of hospital care.
For Jaqueline Moreira de Castro, a nurse who has been working at the Pará Government unit for two years, caring for patients goes beyond techniques. "We dedicate ourselves daily to providing welcoming, human, and safe care, seeking to bring comfort and hope to patients and their families. Nursing is, above all, an act of love and empathy; it is something that reflects in every gesture, in every attentive listening we perform," she explained.
Jaqueline emphasizes the relevance of keeping up with technological and scientific changes and advancements in the nursing field, integrating them into her daily routine. Given the increasing complexity of health care, she stresses that continuous learning is essential. "Being in constant update is not just a choice, but a responsibility to provide the best possible care to patients," Jaqueline concludes.
According to data from the Federal Nursing Council (Cofen), professionals in the field account for up to 70% of the direct interaction time with patients in a hospital environment, further reinforcing their importance in the therapeutic journey.
Humanized Care
Rui Hall Ferreira, 27, was involved in a motorcycle accident, and part of his treatment was at HPEG. For his mother, Sheila Cristine, this period of uncertainty was only alleviated through her faith and the help of the nursing staff.
"God guided us to Galileu Hospital, where he underwent several surgeries and was well cared for by a team of qualified and dedicated professionals in his recovery. It was a very difficult time, as due to the trauma, he became anxious and depressed. But God and the team helped us a lot; the doctors, the nursing staff, I can only thank for this assistance," said the companion.
Rebeca Danielle Campelo, 25, is a patient at HPEG. The young woman suffered a traffic accident and needed to undergo surgeries and other procedures to recover from a problem in one of her arms.
"I was blessed by God, first of all, and secondly by the entire team at Galileu Hospital, who do an excellent job for me and for thousands of other people who pass through here, with humanized care full of affection and love for the patients," she emphasized.
Day by day
At Hospital Galileu, humanized care is not just a concept. It is daily practice. Under the management of the Amazon Social and Environmental Health Institute (ISSAA) and the State Health Department (Sespa), the unit understands that good care involves body, mind, and soul.
"Nursing is the protagonist of integral care. We are those who are there in the most delicate moments of people's lives. We listen to silences, calm anxieties, and give strength when everything seems difficult," says Yasmin Rendeiro, nursing coordinator.
Yasmin states that the responsibilities of nursing go far beyond procedures. "It is difficult to put into words everything we do because what we accomplish goes beyond what can be measured. We care, guide, perform procedures with precision, and at the same time, we welcome anxious looks, listen to silences, and convey security," Yasmin points out.
For the coordinator, 'Nursing Week' is much more than a date on the calendar. "It is a symbolic moment of visibility. To remind ourselves and the world that, even with challenges, we remain steadfast, with passion and purpose. Because we make a difference," she said.
The professional also highlighted the ongoing efforts to value and qualify the team. "We constantly invest in the training of our professionals. With training conducted by the Permanent Education Center, we create an environment where everyone can grow, learn, and offer increasing safety and quality in care," she emphasized.
Profile - The unit is managed by the Social and Environmental Institute of the Amazon (ISSAA), in partnership with the State Department of Public Health (Sespa). HPEG is among the best hospitals in Brazil, with satisfaction rates of nearly 100% and ONA level 3 certification, accredited with excellence in safety criteria, integrated management of processes, and excellence in administration.
