In the first four months of 2025, the Dr. Abelardo Santos Regional Hospital (HRAS), in Icoaraci, a district of Belém, performed 1,660 births, representing an increase of 8.35% compared to the same period in 2024, when 1,532 births were recorded. This growth reaffirms the prominence of the largest public health unit of the Government of Pará in maternal and child health care and its position as one of the largest maternity hospitals in the Northern Region.

Throughout 2024, HRAS performed over 5,000 births, including 2,327 normal deliveries and 2,676 cesarean sections. The monthly average of births performed at the unit exceeds 415 procedures. "To accommodate all these women, HRAS has a robust structure and a qualified medical and multidisciplinary team," highlighted Brenda Laís, coordinator of the Obstetric Center.

HRAS reinforces female empowerment and ensures humanized care for pregnant women

The maternity operates 24 hours a day, with five delivery rooms, 50 inpatient beds, and a specialized team in obstetric and gynecological care. The unit adopts humanized practices using non-pharmacological methods for pain relief, such as massages, warm water baths, and aromatherapy. The presence of physiotherapists during labor provides greater comfort, well-being, and empowerment to the woman.

"The work is directed towards minimizing medical interventions, such as emergency cesareans or excessive use of medications. This reduces prolonged hospitalizations and costs to the healthcare system, in addition to ensuring higher quality in the care provided," explained Brenda.

Touching testimonies

The experience of Pietra Rejane Santos, a resident attendant in Ananindeua, illustrates the humanized reception offered by the hospital. During the birth of her son Emílio, which took place in December 2024, the song "Here Comes The Sun" by The Beatles accompanied the arrival of the baby. "It was a unique experience. If it weren't for this team, it wouldn't have been so special," she stated.

She shared that she felt respected and heard at all stages of labor. "The pain was great, but it was alleviated by the interventions of the professionals, who always respected my choices. It is uncommon to find such accounts. I felt empowered," she said.

Maria Luliane, 32, planned the birth of her son Henry at the unit after learning about the services offered. "The expected delivery was for January, and if clinically possible, my choice was for a water birth. The professionals explained to me how water contributes to relaxation and accelerates the physiological processes of labor, making it more enjoyable," she reported.

Reference structure

HRAS is a reference in assistance to women and children, with services in four areas: emergency care, surgery, clinical hospitalization, and Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Reception is also guaranteed in the Intermediate Care Units (UCIn). The pediatrics department has 10 ICU beds, 25 pediatric clinical beds, and a pediatric emergency room with 24-hour service.

Managed by the Social Institute Mais Saúde (ISMS), the Dr. Abelardo Santos Regional Hospital reinforces the State Government's commitment to ensuring access to quality healthcare, with adequate structure, prepared staff, and a focus on humanizing care for pregnant women and their babies.
