First-time mothers celebrate with humanized births at the largest public hospital in Pará
With over 1,600 births performed just in 2025, Hospital Abelardo Santos reinforces female protagonism and ensures humanized care for pregnant women, under the management of the State Government
“Finally, the love and miracle of my life has arrived,” declared Eliade Alves, 24, as she held her first daughter, Aylla Eloá, in her arms. Like her, other women who gave birth this year at the Dr. Abelardo Santos Regional Hospital (HRAS) in Icoaraci celebrated their first Mother's Day with emotion and gratitude this Sunday (11). The unit, considered the largest in the state public network, is a reference in humanized obstetric care in Pará.

Eliade highlighted the support of the team throughout the birthing process. “It’s an indescribable feeling, a true miracle to hold my daughter in my arms, see her healthy, and know that I was so well cared for here. More than being a mother, I am a happy woman who waited a long time for this moment. I still can’t explain it properly,” she shared.
In just the first four months of 2025, the neonatal complex at HRAS performed 1,660 births, including 727 normal deliveries and 933 cesarean sections. In 2024, the hospital surpassed the mark of 5,000 births. The unit operates 24 hours a day, with five PPP (pre-labor, labor, and post-labor) rooms, one of which is equipped with a bathtub for water births, in addition to having a highly qualified multidisciplinary team.
Female protagonism - For freelancer Júlia Rosa dos Santos, 24, the experience of motherhood was marked by discoveries and emotions. “The most memorable moment happened in the ninth month: the birth. And the coolest thing is that the hospital provided all the support for me to be the protagonist during my child's birth,” she declared. Remembering the moment she heard Gael Peniche's first cry, Júlia became emotional: “After holding him, I didn’t feel any more pain. Everything was planned with care, including the extended care for my family.”

As a reference in humanized practices, HRAS has obstetric physiotherapists who apply non-pharmacological techniques to relieve pain during labor. Relaxation exercises, proper postures, and breathing techniques help reduce anxiety, shorten labor time, and create a more welcoming environment for the arrival of the baby.
Support network - Kailane de Oliveira Teixeira, 19, an administrative assistant and resident of Pratinha, also experienced her first motherhood at HRAS. “Thank God, I didn’t face any complications. It’s exciting to realize that what was generated inside us can be so perfect. This was a significant moment in my life,” she said. Her son, Andrey Guilherme, was born healthy and is developing well. “Every new day, I encounter a different surprise. It’s as if each care turns into learning.”

The importance of the support network was emphasized by health agent Antônia Leane de Sousa, 22. “Being a mother is an intense challenge. Having people around, especially after a cesarean, is essential for the physical and emotional well-being of the woman. I appreciate all the support,” she stated.
Humanized care - Obstetric nurse Pricila Cavalcante highlighted the preparation of HRAS teams to ensure a birth with respect and dignity. “Our commitment is to offer a moment that respects the woman’s choices, with pain relief methods and safe assistance, encouraging the protagonism of the birthing woman.”

She adds: “Each positive experience reinforces how humanized birth is an act of love and empathy. This Mother’s Day, it is essential to recognize and support each mother in her journey, with dignity, care, and respect.”
Managed by the Social Institute Mais Saúde (ISMS), Hospital Abelardo Santos is the largest public health unit of the Government of Pará. “Care is on a free demand basis. Every pregnant woman who needs urgent and emergency care will be welcomed by an excellent obstetric team,” assured the unit's general director, Ednise Amaral.
