The State Secretariat of Culture of Pará (Secult) donated about 24 copies of books to the Historical and Geographical Institute of Pará (IHGP) in Belém this Friday (9). This action is part of an initiative by the secretariat to expand access to the collection of publications produced by Secult over the past years.

The delivery was made in person by the Secretary of Culture, Ursula Vidal, during a meeting held at the IHGP headquarters. The institution, one of the oldest in the state dedicated to preserving Pará's memory and history, is the second to receive copies this week. Last Tuesday (6), the Federal University of Pará (UFPA), through the Mercedarians group, was awarded 21 titles delivered directly to the rector Gilmar Pereira da Silva.

In total, Secult has published about 60 works — with 15 released during the current administration, between 2019 and 2024. The books cover a wide range of themes, including cultural heritage, poetry, biographies, and children's literature. The distribution action focuses on institutions dedicated to education, research, and the appreciation of Pará's culture.

According to the head of the department, the idea is to share this collection with libraries and study centers that can use it as a tool for training and cultural dissemination.

“The delivery of these books to the IHGP represents more than a donation: it is a gesture of partnership. We identified a valuable collection in our technical reserve, with about 59 titles published by Secult, many of which are still unpublished in reference institutions. Our goal is to ensure that this material reaches research, consultation, and training spaces, such as the IHGP. We want these books to circulate, to find readers, and to strengthen the network of institutions that preserve and disseminate Pará's cultural heritage,” said Secretary Ursula Vidal.

Among the authors of the donated works are prominent names such as Edyr Augusto Proença, Dona Onete, and Juraci Siqueira, as well as other figures from regional literature and culture.

In addition to the IHGP, other institutions are expected to receive the publications in the coming days, including units of the Usinas da Paz, which develop cultural and educational actions in different territories of Pará.

The delivered books will be part of the José Veríssimo library collection, located at the Institute's headquarters. “I interpret this delivery as a gift because the Institute is celebrating its 125th anniversary. Receiving this recognition from Secult, even as a private initiative, shows the management's commitment to disseminating access to literature,” said Anaíza Virgolino, president of the IHGP.
