Student from the state school of Capitão Poço awarded a scientific scholarship for environmental projects
The student from the Oswaldo Cruz State School won the gold medal in the competition, a result of the integration with the Blue School Brazil Project, supported by the Federal University of São Paulo

Maria Júlia Souza, a student at the Oswaldo Cruz State School in the municipality of Capitão Poço, in northeastern Pará, was awarded a Junior Scientific Initiation Scholarship (ICJ), granted by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). The recognition resulted from her performance in the Brazilian Ocean Olympiad, held in 2024, where she won the gold medal. Aimed at high school students, the competition results were announced on Thursday (8).
Happy with her achievement, the student emphasized that the support will help her studies, especially in acquiring school supplies. “I am immensely happy to have received this scholarship, which will enhance my studies with school materials. More than a personal achievement, it is an encouragement for all students in the municipality. I am grateful to God, my family, especially my parents and grandparents, my teacher Altielis, and Principal France, who guided me on this path,” the student shared.

About the projects - The achievement is also a result of the involvement of the Oswaldo Cruz State School in the Blue School Brazil Project, in partnership with the Maré de Ciências Program from Unifesp (Federal University of São Paulo). The Blue School Project is an international initiative aimed at raising awareness among children and young people about the importance of ocean conservation.
Although focused on marine preservation, the project includes schools far from the coast, such as the Oswaldo Cruz School, which stands out for developing relevant environmental actions in its community. Among these initiatives are the reforestation of the banks of the igarapés and the production of ecological soap with orange leaves — practices that demonstrate the institution's commitment to a more sustainable and conscious future.
The active participation of the school in the project was encouraged by Geography teacher and advisor Altielis Lima. The excellent result reflects the work that the unit has been doing in recent years, both in preparation and in encouraging students to participate in competitions in various fields of knowledge.

Appreciation - “Maria Júlia's achievement, a high school student, is of great importance both for the school and for public education in Capitão Poço. Receiving an award from a federal institution and an international project values public education and inspires other students to engage in sustainable initiatives. This recognition strengthens the school as a space for transformation, showing that students from distant municipalities, like Capitão Poço, can achieve national and international projects. The Blue School Project, supported by the Federal University of São Paulo, is an example of this, encouraging scientific and sustainable education,” highlights Altielis Lima.
Maria Júlia Souza will receive a financial incentive of R$ 300.00 per month, valid for up to 8 months, to be implemented in 2025. The goal is to develop a work plan focused on sustainable and conscious practices in her school. Currently, she is in the 3rd year of high school and has already organized actions that will continue the projects of the school unit.
