To raise community awareness, the General Hospital of Tailândia (HGT), in southeastern Pará, held an educational event this week on the rational use of medications. The initiative, organized by the Humanization Working Group (GTH), is part of the thematic month activities aimed at promoting the safe and responsible use of these products.

The action began in the outpatient reception, where users and companions were waiting for care. The Technical Responsible of HGT, pharmacist Aline de Morais, provided practical guidance on the correct use of medications. She spoke about characteristics, purpose, care related to administration, and medical prescription.

“Medication is a substance used to prevent, treat, or cure diseases. It should be used under professional guidance, always respecting the dose and schedule defined by the specialist,” informed the professional.

The pharmacist also warned about the risks of improper use and self-medication. “One should not take medication on their own. It is important to seek a health professional and follow the appropriate prescription. It is also necessary to always check the expiration date and keep the medication in an appropriate place,” she added.

Learning - After the approach in the outpatient clinic, the activity was taken to the reception of the Emergency Care Sector (PA), reaching a new group of users and companions. One of the participants was Maria Cristina, 29 years old, who accompanied her mother for a medical appointment. She highlighted the importance of the action and congratulated the initiative. “The action with the pharmacist was very good. I liked it a lot and was able to learn more about the care we should have with our medication at home. Many people sometimes do not know about these cares, but here we had the opportunity to learn. Congratulations to the entire team,” said the companion.

With the aim of making the approach more accessible, Aline de Morais presented several medications, explaining the function and care for each one. The activity was attended by about 40 people.

At the end, educational materials on the rational use of medications were distributed, reinforcing the topics covered.

Structure - The General Hospital of Tailândia has 51 beds and maintains an Intermediate Care Unit (UCI) with nine beds, six for adults and three for pediatrics. Users served by the Unified Health System (SUS) have access to the services offered by HGT through the Municipal Regulation Center, and to emergency services on a walk-in basis or referred by Samu, Military Fire Brigade, and Highway Police.
