The Regional Hospital of Southeast Pará – Dr. Geraldo Veloso (HRSP), in Marabá, is a reference in oncological care for the population of the Carajás Integration Region. Among the available specializations, oncological gynecology stands out, an area focused on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cervical, ovarian, and other cancers affecting women.

Care by a specialist in oncological gynecology contributes to maintaining the health of the female population

Renata Freitas, 47 years old, a resident of Marabá, was referred to the Hospital after changes were identified in routine exams. "I was attended by a specialist, who explained the entire process very calmly, which made me feel more at ease. She also requested new exams to confirm the diagnosis," Renata said.

Between January and April 2025, the Oncological Gynecology Service of the Pará government unit performed over 500 consultations, surgeries, and various specialized procedures. This significant number reinforces the relevance of the service for early detection and appropriate treatment of gynecological cancers.

Another patient, farmer Joana Pereira, 49 years old, a resident of the municipality of Bom Jesus do Tocantins, also highlighted the importance of the service. "Before, we had to travel to Belém to get this type of treatment. Today, thank God, we have this care here, close to home, and that makes all the difference," she stated.

Reference - The specialized care in Oncological Gynecology, at the unit managed by the Institute of Social and Environmental Health of the Amazon (ISSAA) and the State Department of Public Health (Sespa), contributes to improving women's health in the southeast region.

According to oncological gynecologist Márcia Almeida, the specialty is focused on the comprehensive care of women with suspected or diagnosed gynecological cancers, such as those of the cervix, ovary, and endometrium. "It is an area that combines the knowledge of gynecology and oncology, offering a complete approach, from prevention and early detection to surgical treatment," the doctor explained.

The Oncology Service offers outpatient care, clinical evaluation, diagnostic exams, biopsies, minimally invasive procedures, and oncological surgeries. The team also works in a multidisciplinary manner, integrating psychological support at all stages of treatment.

Doctor Márcia Almeida: the goal is to ensure humanized care

"At the Hospital, we carry out everything from screening women with changes in preventive exams to specialized surgeries. Our goal is to ensure humanized, effective, and accessible care, allowing women in the region to receive quality treatment without having to travel to other cities," Márcia Almeida added.

Regulation - According to Rainara Fernandes, head of care at the Regional Hospital of Marabá, patients who need specialized care in oncological gynecology are referred through the State Regulation Center, coordinated by Sespa.

"Access to the service is regulated. First, the patient needs to seek a public health unit in their city. If necessary, the doctor will make the referral. From there, she must take this document and her personal data to the Municipal Health Department, where registration, request, and scheduling of the consultation will be made in the state regulation system," explained Rainara Fernandes.

Prevention is essential - Doctor Márcia Almeida also emphasized that prevention continues to be the best way to combat gynecological cancers. She highlighted the following important measures: Regularly perform the preventive exam (known as Pap smear) as per medical guidance, especially for women between 25 and 64 years old;
vaccinate against HPV (Human Papillomavirus), related to cervical cancer. The vaccine is available through the Unified Health System (SUS); maintain healthy habits, such as a balanced diet, physical activity, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption; be alert to signs from the body, such as bleeding outside the menstrual period, persistent pelvic pain, and changes in the menstrual cycle, and consult a gynecologist regularly, even in the absence of symptoms.

Care at the Regional Hospital of Southeast Pará is entirely provided by SUS. The unit has 135 beds, with 97 for clinical hospitalization and 38 distributed among Adult, Pediatric, and Neonatal ICUs.
