Workshop at Curro Velho Teaches Papietagem Technique on Handmade Bottles
Led by visual artist Naná Maciel, the activity promotes the reuse of materials and values Pará's culture

From May 5 to 23, the Cultural Foundation of Pará (FCP) promotes, in the space of the Curro Velho Workshop Center, a papietagem workshop on handmade bottles. With 15 spots available for those over 15 years old, the workshop will be held from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM, reinforcing the proposal of sustainability and creativity.
Led by visual artist Naná Maciel, the activity will teach participants the technique of coating with kraft paper and cardboard, complemented by the application of dried leaves, fabric fragments, and other reused materials. The pieces produced can be used as decorative objects or to hold handmade beverages.
The idea for the workshop arose from Naná Maciel's experience as a student in a papietagem workshop using cardboard tubes, held in 2013 and 2014. However, she realized that the technique could be adapted for other materials, such as glass bottles, which are often discarded. "Doing some research, I noticed many beautiful bottles being thrown away. The technique of painting on glass was already common, but I wanted to test the coating with craft paper," explains Naná. After experiments, she developed an effective method, adding value to the bottles with decorative elements and, later, with the production of regional liqueurs.

In addition to learning the papietagem technique on glass, participants will be able to apply the knowledge to other surfaces, such as furniture, walls, and various objects. Maciel explains that the technique is versatile and can be used to transform and revitalize pieces in everyday life, and the workshop also encourages entrepreneurship, as students can sell their creations, whether as decorative pieces or with handmade products, generating a source of income.

The initiative is part of the FCP's calendar of actions aimed at the dissemination and preservation of local artistic expressions. By offering accessible training, the Foundation reaffirms its commitment to the democratization of culture and the promotion of the creative economy in Pará.
