With specialized care aimed at indigenous peoples, the Public Regional Hospital of the East (HRPL), located in Paragominas, southeastern Pará, continuously invests in improving its services. The unit seeks to strengthen dialogue, combat prejudice, and promote actions that ensure dignity and quality in the assistance provided to the indigenous communities of the region.

Celebrated this month, National Indigenous Peoples Day is an opportunity to recognize and value the cultural diversity, history, and rights of the indigenous peoples of Brazil. In honor of the date, HRPL held the event "Indigenous Peoples Day: Strengthening the Origins" last week. The initiative reaffirmed the institution's commitment to respecting ancestral cultures and the legislation that ensures access to health for the various ethnicities in the country. The program included presentations and cultural exhibitions that exalted the richness and resilience of indigenous peoples.

At the opening of the event, the administrative assistant of the Permanent Education Center (NEP), Gustavo Silva, addressed the process of acculturation in Brazil, highlighting indigenous influences in the daily lives of urban populations. Then, the assistant director, Karla Emanuelle, discussed the concepts of culture and health, relating them to the specialized care practices adopted at the unit. Among them, she highlighted the continuous qualification of professionals, the registration of indigenous zones, the guarantee of access to health, and humanized care.

For Karla Emanuelle, "recognizing the importance of culture, traditions, and indigenous knowledge is essential to guarantee human rights and the well-being of indigenous peoples. It is our commitment to offer differentiated care, respecting the specificities of each ethnicity and integrating traditional medicine into health services," said the manager.

The indigenous community was represented by Iritan Tembé, president of the Local Indigenous Health Council, and Valdecir Tembé, district councilor of Indigenous Health. Both shared experiences, denounced prejudices faced daily by indigenous peoples, and paid tribute to the professionals of the Indigenous Health Support House (CASAI), who work directly in the communities. The event concluded with a symbolic moment of unity among the participants, who sang a traditional indigenous song, celebrating culture and strengthening the bonds of respect and integration.

Training

At the beginning of this year, HRPL promoted training for its employees focused on care for indigenous communities. The training, titled "Indigenous Health: Interculturality in Network," was held at the hospital's central reception and conducted by the Permanent Education Center, with the participation of indigenous leaders from the region. The initiative trained 222 professionals from the unit.

"I feel safe being treated at HRPL. The professionals are committed, qualified, and provide humanized care, with agility, good communication, and clarifications," said Diego Tembé, 36, son of the chief of the Bate Vento village and supporter of the indigenous cause.

Alice Ebling, 20, administrative assistant at the hospital's central reception, highlighted the importance of the event to improve care and expand understanding of the needs of indigenous communities.

"Working in the care sector, it is essential to participate in these actions and better understand the needs of each person. The events and courses promoted at the hospital strengthen respect, break cultural barriers, and make us more connected with those we serve," she concluded.
