On the night of last Saturday (26), a baby was rescued at the 31st Battalion of the Military Police barracks in Abaetetuba, northeastern Pará, after arriving at the location choked and having difficulty breathing. The quick action of the on-duty agents prevented a tragic outcome.
Sergeant Mário Cardoso and Corporal Luana Paes performed the Heimlich maneuver, a first aid procedure used to clear the airways. The technique was carried out inside the barracks and resulted in the child resuming breathing.

"The father arrived with the grandmother and the child, and the first thing was to check the vital signs; since she was very young, the risk of losing the signs was greater, but everything went well, and the child fortunately started breathing again," said Corporal Luana, who also explained that the Heimlich maneuver is one of the skills learned in the basic first aid techniques of the Military Police training course.

According to Major Geys Corrêa, deputy commander of the 31st BPM, "this type of occurrence is not common." "It is not usual in our actions to encounter this type of situation, but we are prepared to deal with this kind of emergency and serve the population in this way as well," concluded the major.

The Military Police advises that in similar cases, it is essential to seek help immediately. Knowledge of basic first aid techniques can also be crucial to save lives until specialized assistance arrives.
