The first public community library in a quilombola territory was installed by the State Government, through the Cultural Foundation of Pará, on the afternoon of Friday (25). The "quilomboteca" is located in the Quilombo do América territory, in the municipality of Bragança, in the Rio Caeté Integration Region, northeastern Pará. The Quilombo do América has been in existence for over 200 years and had its territory legalized by the Palmares Cultural Foundation on January 21, 2015.

Children receive another incentive to the habit of reading

The "quilomboteca" was installed at the headquarters of the Remnant Quilombo do América Association (Arquia). Roseti Araújo, president of the Association, emphasized the importance of the work carried out by the FCP. "Our children still have a lot of difficulty reading. Some have not learned yet, and others have not developed the habit. Therefore, all this work to encourage reading and deliver books is very important for our community. Reading is knowledge and empowerment. It is through education that we will form new quilombola leaders," said Roseti Araújo.

Director of the Foundation, Ygor Kahwage, brought the collection to Quilombo do América

Collection - Currently formed by 505 quilombolas, the community received 800 books from Pará authors from the FCP. The Administrative and Financial Director of the Cultural Foundation, Ygor Kahwage, highlighted the importance of strengthening the space for reading and knowledge during the delivery of the works.

"It is very gratifying to make a delivery of this magnitude, of 800 books, to strengthen this beautiful initiative of the community to encourage the habit of reading. Through reading, it is possible to reach anywhere. Knowledge is liberating. And the mission of the FCP is to democratize access to culture and knowledge in all corners of Pará," he emphasized.

Workshop - The delivery of the collection for the "quilomboteca" also marked the conclusion of the Quilombola Reading and Writing Workshop, promoted by the Foundation between the 21st and 25th of this month, in three territories: Quilombo do América, Quilombo do Torres, and Quilombo da Pontinha - the last two located in Tracuateua, a municipality 17 km away from Bragança. Both also received books from Pará authors from the FCP.

The workshop "There is Reading in the Quilombo" is promoted by the Cultural Foundation with the aim of strengthening the identity process, as well as stimulating and developing the practice of reading. The action is part of the "FCP throughout Pará" program, an art and culture initiative aimed at strengthening production in various artistic languages and manifestations that value identity.
