One year after the delivery of the PA-220 highway, known as Transmaú, in northeastern Pará, by Governor Helder Barbalho, on December 24, 2023, the local population is reaping the benefits of yet another state investment in road infrastructure. Fully paved, the highway provides access to the municipalities of Curuçá, Igarapé-Açu, Maracanã, and Marapanim, strengthening tourism, mobility to other cities, and the flow of production.

“The paving, above all, brought dignity to the lives of those people living along the Transmaú. Families who spent decades dealing with dust in the summer and mud in the winter now have dignity. For the villages, it was a breath of new life. It opened doors for growth, new dreams, and possibilities. This region has always been amazing, full of culture and tradition, and now it is gaining the recognition it deserves,” says Matheus Silva, a merchant living in the village of Matapiquara, in Marapanim.

The merchant also emphasized that throughout this year, the PA-220 has boosted the tourism and culture sectors. “This region has always been incredible, full of culture and tradition, and now it is gaining the recognition it deserves. The carimbó festivals, for example, are giving a new face to these brave people, full of history and talent. It’s beautiful to see how a project can transform so much. I have followed this entire process of changes and implementations, and now I feel motivated to invest in tourism. I recently opened a CNPJ (National Register of Legal Entities) for my property and will invest heavily in ecological tourism, boosting the local economy. I also have açaí extraction business,” informs Matheus, as he envisions a future full of opportunities.

Excited, he recalls that before the reconstruction of Transmaú, “there were only challenges.” Now, with the road, economic development and quality of life are arriving for the residents, especially in accessing the villages.

Integration - The 42 kilometers of the highway delivered by the Government of Pará, through the State Secretariat of Infrastructure and Logistics (Seinfra), underwent works for rainwater drainage, construction of sidewalks and curbs, earthworks, base and asphalt with complete signage, in addition to the concrete bridge built over the Marapanim River, in the community of Cristolândia.

With the road, the Government integrated Igarapé-Açu, Curuçá, Maracanã, and Marapanim, providing a boost to the local economy, consequently generating jobs and income in a region that has family farming as its economic base.

Logistics corridor - In the assessment of the head of Seinfra, Adler Silveira, “the paving of the PA-220 represents a milestone in the infrastructure of northeastern Pará. With this highway, we have consolidated a logistics corridor that connects communities, strengthens regional integration, and provides favorable conditions for economic development. This is yet another example of the Government of Pará's commitment to projects that transform lives and generate progress,” highlights the secretary.

Professor and entrepreneur Bruno Coelho, a native of Marapanim, assures that “the paving of the PA-220 improved traffic flow, increased the income of our farmers and merchants, among other entrepreneurs in the communities that this highway encompasses. I can guarantee that, with the paving, the impacts have been tremendous on our businesses. I can highlight the tourism aspect, as we have great bathing resorts in the Vila Maú region, in particular. This paving came to improve our enterprises in the region,” he emphasizes.

The Government is expected to complete and deliver soon the last stretch of the PA-220, with an extension of 11.6 km, in the section that goes from the junction with the PA-395 to the junction with the PA-127 – an investment that exceeds R$ 23 million.
