The Pará Sanitation Company was invited by the Financial Fund for the Development of the Plata Basin (Fonplata – Development Bank) to present the actions of Prodesan Pará Lagos during Water Week 2025 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The panel was part of the event "Alternative Water: experiences in Mercosur facing water stress," held at the Metropolitan Design Center, bringing together experts from various countries to discuss water resilience solutions.

The meeting presented initiatives adopted by Mercosur cities in response to the worsening water stress, including projects from Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil focused on water reuse, recovery of water sources, and environmental protection. Representing Cosanpa, engineer Cleide Ferreira detailed the set of actions that make up Prodesan Pará Lagos.

She highlighted that the project, which includes sewage collection and treatment works in four neighborhoods and two municipalities (Belém and Ananindeua), is aligned with international guidelines for water security and foresees strategic interventions in the Água Preta and Bolonha lakes, which supply more than 70% of the population of the Metropolitan Region of Belém. The actions include dredging, control of macrophytes, removal of sediments, and protection of catchment areas. According to the engineer, these measures align with practices adopted by other Mercosur countries and are essential to curb the degradation of water sources.

“We showed how the actions of Prodesan Pará Lagos will increase resilience to water stress. It is a work that involves environmental conservation, recovery of urban lakes, and also structural measures, such as the sewage system, which is essential to prevent pollution,” explained the engineer from Cosanpa.

The Fonplata panel also brought together representatives from IHE Delft, Corebe, Saae Indaiatuba, and Aysam, moderated by bank specialist Eduardo Bogado.

Prodesan Pará Lagos

Prodesan Pará Lagos, currently in the final signing phase with the financing banks Fonplata and NDB, foresees an investment of US$ 100 million, plus US$ 25 million in counterpart from the State government. The project includes the implementation of a sewage collection belt around the Água Preta Lake, the construction of a new module of the Sewage Treatment Station, as well as structural actions, such as the removal of macrophytes in the Bolonha Lake and the removal of accumulated sediments in the Água Preta Lake.

The set of these interventions aims to protect the water sources that supply 70% of the Metropolitan Region of Belém, ensure long-term water security, and promote climate justice and social inclusion, pillars that reinforce the strategic importance of the project for Pará and the entire Amazon region.
