The Dr. Abelardo Santos Regional Hospital (HRAS), located in Icoaraci, a district of Belém, was honored this Wednesday (26) by the Pará Hemotherapy and Hematology Center Foundation (Hemopa) by receiving the award for the Solidarity Blood Donation Gincana. The institution achieved second place among the agencies that managed to gather the most donors, totaling 674 collected bags.

To achieve this result, volunteers and professionals from HRAS participated in the campaign promoted between October and November. The action is part of the annual calendar of Hospital Abelardo Santos and Hemopa, reinforcing the commitment to promoting health and encouraging voluntary donation. The amount collected has the capacity to benefit up to 1,068 people.

According to the general director of HRAS, Flávio Tavares, the recognition represents a significant contribution to the entire state health network. "The involvement of our team shows that Abelardo Santos is dedicated not only to direct patient care but also to initiatives that strengthen the entire public system throughout Pará. Therefore, the result brings great satisfaction," he stated.

Complexity

As a reference in high-complexity procedures, Hospital Abelardo Santos is the largest public health unit of the Government of Pará. In the last three years (2023, 2024, and 2025), the unit performed 32,368 surgeries. For many of these procedures to be effective, the use of blood bags is necessary, ensuring patient safety and treatment efficiency.

The technical director, Dr. Marcel Ramalho, emphasizes the importance of this act. "In various situations, the blood bag is what allows the surgery to continue without posing risks to the patient. This commitment strengthens not only Hemopa's stocks but also ensures that HRAS continues to save lives every day with the supportive help of those who choose to donate blood," he emphasized.

Finally, the nurse from the Transfusion Agency, Edilson Cardoso Júnior, adds: "Our work is continuous: it involves educating users, raising awareness among professionals, and reinforcing the importance of each donation. Keeping the bank stocked is a permanent challenge, and we only achieve this goal when everyone understands that a single bag can be decisive in saving multiple lives."

HRAS

The Dr. Abelardo Santos Regional Hospital is managed by the Social Institute Mais Saúde (ISMS), in partnership with the State Department of Public Health (Sespa). Recognized for its care for women, children, and the indigenous population, it performed over one million services in 2024 alone, including medium and high-complexity surgeries, exams, and consultations, among other procedures.

The structure includes a pediatric, gynecological, and obstetric emergency room open 24 hours, in addition to 670 beds distributed among emergency, surgery, clinical hospitalization, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and Intermediate Care Units (UCIn). It is also one of the main maternity hospitals in the state, performing over 5,000 deliveries per year, and has a renal therapy center.
