The panel "Geographical Indications: Protection of traditional knowledge and sustainable development" was coordinated on the afternoon of this Wednesday (19) by the Secretary of Agricultural Development and Fisheries (Sedap), as part of the COP30 program, in the Green Zone. Among the topics discussed, the promotion of climate change mitigation through low environmental impact production systems stood out.

The first presentation was by agronomist Márcia Tagore, coordinator of the State Program for Incentives to Geographical Indications (GIs) and Collective Brands of Sedap. She informed that Pará currently has recognized GIs for products such as Bragança flour; Marajó cheese; Tomé-Açu cocoa beans; and guaraná from the Indigenous Land Andirá-Marau, located between Pará and Amazonas.

According to Márcia Tagore, the recognition of GIs is directly linked to environmental conservation. "Many of the processes we experience are linked to the way humans interact with the environment," she stated.

New GIs in process
Sedap is also monitoring, in partnership with the State Secretary of Science, Technology and Professional and Technological Education (Sectet), the processes for recognizing new GIs by the National Institute of Industrial Property (Inpi). Among the products under analysis are: Tuerê cocoa (Novo Repartimento); Transamazon cocoa; Mocajuba cocoa; açaí; Pirabas honey.

In total, the Legal Amazon already has several products recognized with GIs, in Pará and other States: Amazonas (8), Pará (4), Rondônia (3), Acre (2), Amapá (2), Roraima (1), Tocantins (1), and Mato Grosso (1).

During the panel, representatives of already recognized GIs in Pará, such as Bragança flour, attended the presentations and shared experiences.

Márcia Tagore also announced that on the 11th and 12th of next month, Sedap will coordinate the third edition of the International Seminar on Geographical Indication and Collective Brands (Sigema).

The program included the participation of representatives from Inpi, Sebrae, and the city hall of Bragança, strengthening the dialogue between governments, producers, and funding institutions.
