The State Traffic Department (Detran) intensifies inspection and education actions aimed at the safety of motorcyclists, with a special focus on combating overcrowding on motorcycles. This practice, increasingly observed on urban and rural roads, represents one of the main causes of serious accidents involving two-wheeled vehicles.

In 2024, 63,061 violations were recorded for riding a motorcycle without a helmet and 33,924 for carrying a passenger without using safety equipment. The numbers reinforce the importance of awareness and compliance with current legislation, which limits the use of the vehicle to a maximum of two people, including the driver.

The general director of Detran, Renata Coelho, explains that the agency has been working in an integrated manner with other safety partners to ensure compliance with the law and preserve lives. “The motorcycle is a vehicle for individual use or, at most, for two people. Overcrowding compromises stability, reduces control, and puts everyone at risk. Our role is to guide, inspect, and prevent tragedies that can be avoided with responsible actions,” emphasized Renata Coelho.

As determined by the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB), carrying passengers in excess of the capacity indicated by the manufacturer is a serious violation, subject to fines, suspension of the right to drive, and vehicle retention. This regulation exists to preserve the safety of the driver and other road users.

Educational and integrated actions - In addition to inspection, Detran has reinforced the educational nature of its actions, providing information and guidance on the subject to schools, communities, and strategic points in the State. Activities include lectures, distribution of informational materials, and practical demonstrations on the correct use of safety equipment.

“Traffic education is the most effective way to change behaviors. We work to ensure that drivers and passengers understand that haste or convenience should never take precedence over safety. An overcrowded motorcycle represents a real risk of irreparable loss,” reinforced the general director.

Inspection and traffic education operations continue on an ongoing basis, prioritizing roads with high motorcycle traffic and areas of high circulation. The goal is to increase the presence of public authorities on the streets, combining guidance and responsibility.

Commitment to road safety - Detran emphasizes that the protection of life and traffic safety are permanent priorities of management. In addition to educational blitzes, the agency has intensified monitoring of repeat offenders and promoted campaigns on social media, seeking to reach an increasingly larger audience with clear and easily understandable messages.

“Traffic safety is everyone's responsibility. Respecting the rules is not just a matter of obeying the law, but a gesture of care for one's own life and that of others. Detran will continue to act firmly to curb practices that endanger the integrity of drivers, passengers, and pedestrians,” concluded Renata Coelho.

The agency reinforces that motorcycles should carry, at most, two people, both properly equipped with helmets and appropriate footwear. Overcrowding is a serious violation and will be subject to intensive inspection. According to Detran, safety begins with conscious choices and respect for the rules that save lives.
