On Sunday (16), the Mangal das Garças Zoobotanical Park in Belém will hold a special edition of the Ecozoo Project on World Falconry Day. The activity will be followed by natural paints workshops from the Ecoarte children's project. The free program will start at 9 am in the Park's amphitheater.

Falconry is a science that has been around for over 3,000 years and involves establishing trust between humans and a bird of prey, allowing them to work together towards a common goal.

“Falconry is a gradual process based on respect, proper handling, and rewarding desirable behaviors, allowing the falconer to gradually gain the bird's trust until it recognizes them as its working partner. In the end, the falconer must also place their trust in the bird, allowing it to fly freely, believing it will return after training. Thus, both falconer and bird share the responsibility of nurturing this partnership, which benefits both and represents one of humanity's great cultural heritages, a true symbol of the connection between humans and the rest of nature,” explains Camilo Gonzalez, veterinarian at Mangal.

Return to Freedom - On this special date, the public will have the opportunity to witness the first free flight of the Apuí hawk (Heterospizias meridionalis), which arrived at the Park in April this year after being seized. Apuí had its flight feathers cut by a person it trusted, which prevented it from returning to the wild.

“Today, after five months of patient care, it is ready to fly again and share its story with our visitors. If it was humans who once took away its ability to fly, it is also humans who can now help it recover and find a new purpose, valuing and respecting the trust it still places in us,” says Camilo Gonzalez.

The morning continues after the Ecozoo Moment with the natural paints workshop in the Ecoarte Project. With the help of "Cumbuca – Creative Workshops", children will be able to create their own pigments from natural elements. A moment that combines environmental education, learning, and fun.

In addition to the children's projects, Mangal das Garças has various daily programs. During the month of November, due to COP30, Mangal das Garças will be open every day.
